To be honest there are probably as many employees dreading going. These outings usually consist of "bonding" exercises which nobody in their right mind enjoys.
However, it is pretty shortsighted of the company to divide the staff. A little bit of thought and everyone could have been "treated" to some sort of jolly.

Which makes you wonder why they didn't ask for volunteers to stay behind, everybody could have been happy.

I am glad I don't have to rely on you if I was ever in a fix with an employer.

Where do you think things like harassment, bullying and victimisation start? They start with things just like this. They start off with being left out of company events, then it's the Christmas party, then its promotions and pay rises and all of a sudden, it's first in line for redundancies.

You have made your point quite clearly, but there is really no need to be rude just because somebody disagrees with you.

I am perfectly capable of reading the OP post and understand perfectly their point. The point i am making is the issue isnt as black and white as is being made out
Yes, it is. This is not an unlawful with-holding of bonus.
and that there are potentially other issues that could arise for the organisation due to this decision.
Please don't start on ..... because the OP is an elderly and young black/asian/white lesbian/transexual/transgendered who is disabled/falls under DDA/believes they fall under DDA and therefore has been discriminated against. They are the only issues that come to mind that you could bring up

In terms of whether this is the same as a bonus or not- i would argue, in princple, it is.
Even if it was - which it isn't - this is not a situation of unlawful with-holding of bonus. OP has not stated that this is contractual, not implied it. QED

A bonus offered by an employer is designed to reward employees for their efforts and to drive performance improvement. In essence, it is a reward strategy. This event is also a reward and the same princples apply for its use- reward, motivate and drive performance improvement.
No, you are just assuming that.

I wasnt actually suggesting the OP OH go into work and start talking about reward theory, and the impact of the company decision on employee. There have been several posters on the thread that also havent offered any advice but their opinion. If you feel there is nothing more to say on the topic, i suggest you stop contributing. I on the otherhand, could debate this for hours.
Please don't, the idea is to answer the question, not give your personal opinion. Vist the Moneysavers Arms for that.[/QUOTE]

I fixed your post for you.

    Can of worms.....opened.

As the argument goes on I can see the reason in saying it is not a withheld bonus, but just horrendous treatment.

To add context, the company employs about 480 staff on the site that is going on the trip. They operate a 5 day working week. 12 of those 480 will be required to stay on site for cover. Those 12 people will essentially be staying behind and having to lie to customers on the phone about why their orders will not be fulfilled as there will not be available facilities to process them.

My OH knows 4 others who were drawn to stay. She and these 4 all see to have had run ins with management recently.

They have already tried to open a discussion about lieu days with higher management but have been flatly refused and told company policy will not allow that or any other alternative.

Those who belittle the idea of it being harassment and/or bulling should put themselves in the place of the 12. Imagine the weeks up to this big event when everyone will be talking about it. And then the week after when everyone will be saying how much fun they had. Would that be nice?

It is simply appalling treatment and shows the company up for what they are. I'm fortunate to work for someone much better and in a similar instance where I was not able to go to a works Christmas dinner as my boss wanted me to visit a client he shelled out for a meal for the OH and me. This contrast striked it home and ultimately they will lose her. Their loss.

I think that those left behind should come in an extra half hour before their shift and put up christmas decorations around their desks, having brought in cakes etc. They should leave the Christmas decorations up and take home most of the cake, but leave some remnants and the wrappings to curl up overnight on an unused desk - together with some plastic cups with left over fruit juice and a couple of paper plates with little piles of crisp debris. Make a party of it - but no alcohol

Or perhaps they won't see it that way, if they have isolated the troublemakers to miss the jolly!
  • OP's OH, I wouldn't worry about it. Easier said than done I know but just turn up, do your hours and head home on time.

I've been to a few and only one was really, really enjoyable. I was a friend's guest so not my company anyway! The others range from okay to nice-try-but-awful.

I've always viewed them as nice gestures but such things mean you've heaps of work to catch up on the next day anyway. I'd enjoy just getting on with things and and chilling when you're done.
