Hence sitting down with the employer to discuss it sensibly; with the others that are also staying behind.

According to the OP, they have said that they are not going to get anything.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

hardly a case of being a 'doormat' someone has to stay behind, unluckilly it was the OPs OH

To take the attitude that we should all accept unfairness is not very helpful.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Sometimes life is unfair, we all have to deal with some unfairness in life.

See, this is why kids at school shouldn't get rewarded just for "taking part"...it breeds a generation of spoilt brats who think the world owes them something.

    F**k me!

    It's called negotiation!

You want us to do A - so you need to sit down as adults and negotiate.

We want B - so we can meet somewhere in the middle.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Presumably she's not the only one not going, and are the others also looking for a bonus to compensate, or are they just accepting that it was bad luck and getting on with it?
  • Will the people who are attending the event be paying tax on the value of the 'taxable benefit'? If not, then it is NOT classed as part of pay/bonus, it is a business meeting and they can invite who they please provided she is not being left out as a result of unlawful discrimination e.g. all the female members of the team are being left behind while all the male staff get to go. Discrimination is illegal, 'unfairness' perceived or real is not. TBH it does sound a bit like spoiled brat syndrome, and she will not do her career any good if she kicks up a fuss.

No, they should just rollover as well, apparently, because everybody should just give into unfairness in the workplace and forget about standing up for yourselves. Where would we be, I wonder, if the trade union movement just said to all the five year old miners, chimney boys and child mill workers, "well life is unfair, get over yourselves and grow up?"

What if they ignored the workers' requests? What would be the next step for them? Because if the employers had any intentions of offering them something in return, they would have done so. How much, do you think, they feel they are valued?

My OH works shifts so his company had two events to enable everyone to make one of them even working shifts etc.. I would have thought you would at least get the time back that they are benefiting from.

I've worked in lots of places where we have had to have such celebrations in two shifts. It makes a darn site more sense than leaving a few people out each time.

Not good management strategy at all: especially as the drawing of lots was also done in secret:(
