Denied going to company event - same as withholding bonus?

It's not the OP who got left out-it's his partner.
TBH if her attitude is the same as his -it's all a bit childish and "what's in it for me"
Life isn't fair sometimes.........and learning that sooner rather than later makes it easier to cope with.
However nothing to stop the "selected" politely enquiring how the thanks is going to be expressed to them (without the whine) expecting a bonus is a tad off the planet reality though ! Box of chocolates or a voucher wouldn't hurt though as a gesture.

Is she being paid for the work she is asked to do as per her contract ? If so I dont see a problem.0

Good afternoon. I'm asking this question on behalf of my partner. She works for a reasonably large company who have a large multiday company outing coming up in a couple of month, where the employees are being wined, dined and entertained in nice hotels and being pampered with spa treatments etc....
However, this is happening during work hours and she has been "selected" as one of the people who will have to forego the event to stay behind and cover for others.
She will receive no alternative compensating payment or event for this.
Would this be classed as a payment-in-kind and hence be classed as being an unlawfully withheld bonus?
No - unless the people who are going are paying tax on the benefit then yes.
Has she sat down with the other people to see how to approach this sensibly with the employer? If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

Well, you can be a doormat if you want to; me, I'd rather stand up and be counted. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Presumably it's
a) keep the firm open with a skeleton staff and have a funday for most staff
or
b) don't have a funday for anyone.
I guess that option c)close the firm so everyone can go, just wasn't feasible for whatever reason, fair enough.
so would the op prefer that they'd gone for option B and no-one got anything?Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -

I think the main thing is, not necessarily that the OP's partner was not chosen for the trip, but the fact that she is not getting any recognition for her sacrifice for staying behind. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Hence sitting down with the employer to discuss it sensibly; with the others that are also staying behind. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0
