I would advise anyone to check here,re DIY funerals...the handbook is very good

If my son had died at home,it would have only cost the price of the wood for the coffin...can`t remember if a death certificate costs anything.

I have to say,a DIY funeral was something that I felt strongly about any way...but expected it to be me or hubby, hence I already knew about the book, the procedures, law etc

    Thanks for sharing this link

An online Coffin Company would not allow a coffin to be delivered in the wrong size as it their duty to check the size of the deceased with the mortuary.

Mortuaries frequently get this wrong and don't do it properly. When I worked as a Funeral Director we'd get a size of 5'9" and find the deceased was only 5'6". This has an impact on cemetery staff who dig to accommodate certain coffin sizes etc.

We had two suppliers for our coffins and would occasionally source something more specific elsewhere. Our mark-up was about 150 - 300% but that was our only operating profit - everything else covered costs.

Really ? Does 3" actually cause a problem ? I would have thought that mose cemeteries have mini diggers nowadays so don't see the issue ?

I was also under the impression that most coffins were manufactured in standard sizes. It doesn't make financial sense to hold stock of items that are only an inch or so different. It's that old retail rule where stock equates to money and no one likes to hold to much stock !
  • Looks like some 'retailers' may have caught sight of this forum thread as there are now a range for sale on the well known auction site !

I will be making my own coffin out of old used pallets how cost effective is that and very mse, i have the view when i am dead i wont care what i am being put in and i'm being cremated anyway so dont want to pay hundreds for my coffin.
  • Good idea... you may want to check what pallets you use. Some of the ones used to import are chemically treated to prevent unwanted bugs etc from reaching our shores... I know from reading that some crematoriums are funny about burning stuff containing chemicals...

    just a thought :-)
