Now I'm liking the chocolate box finish on these cardboard ones!

    Liking the wine one....
  • I can't post a link.

There is rather a trendy option from Uono Coffins in Germany. they doa pod coffin. I imagine they are very expensive though.

Now that is in my opinion a very nice looking coffin.

There must be interest - at least in the US with Walmart and Costco selling them direct. I guess its only a matter of time.

Its slightly different in the US, when arranging a funeral there you can go into a funeral home and tell them where you want the coffin purchasing from or that you want to supply your own

Maybe in these times of austerily and the vastly differing prices for a basic coffin, it's time for the government to introduce a "Utility" mark coffin, like they had for furniture and many other domestic items in the last war. It should be of standard design, and be sold for the same price, whevever in the country you bought it, from Lands End to John o'Groats.

But I'm not under any obligation to purchase it from the FD that I walk into here in the UK either.

I've not read anywhere that the FD can refuse for me to use a coffin / casket of my own choice from my own source here in the UK.

I guess its what is expected and is traditionally what happens here. Maybe if there was more competition this would change.

I guess its about educating people that they can purchase from any source.

    I like this idea.

I would advise anyone to check here,re DIY funerals...the handbook is very good

If my son had died at home,it would have only cost the price of the wood for the coffin...can`t remember if a death certificate costs anything.

I have to say,a DIY funeral was something that I felt strongly about any way...but expected it to be me or hubby, hence I already knew about the book, the procedures, law etc

I would post a link to our cardboard coffins and coffin cover, but as im a new member it wont let me, you could however google coffin cover, it will show how a cardboard coffin can still have the look of a traditional funeral
You might also be suspected of advertising. ;) It's lovely to have your input, but please read the Forum Rules if you haven't already.

Oh yes! Can't remember how much, but it costs! Maybe the first one doesn't, and it's then £3.50 for each copy, if you buy them at the time of registering the death. I'm basing this on the fact that I paid £35 and I'm sure I had 10 (2 executors, didn't want to be short, actually I didn't need that many).

The key piece of paper to begin with is the Green Form, which in our case was issued by the hospital, and had to be passed on to the FD. There are different forms for cremation and burial, they are a bit fussier about cause of death if they're not going to be able to dig you up and double check later - to put it bluntly!

With regards to postage costs, if you think of how big a coffin actually is then the cost isnt actually high, if the demand for them posting out was higher then the cost would probably decrease.

I am sooooo tempted to order one, just for the entertainment value of watching it being delivered (be just my luck if I was out at the time)! :rotfl:
