I agree whilst the cardbaord ones seem practical, they don't look very dignified, and to be honest £160 (including delivery) seems a bit steep in my eyes. I know prices of raw materials always change and maybe these are units are two / three times thicker than what we normally associate with cardboard.

But when you think about it someone on here could get a veneer coffin for that price, yet when I asked a couple of local firms they quoted me £270 - £400 with a caveat that it would be cheaper if I used their services.

Am a bit miffed so far and am looking at making my own now.

Still interesting to see peoples views on the poll. Maybe its time for change.

I would post a link to our cardboard coffins and coffin cover, but as im a new member it wont let me, you could however google coffin cover, it will show how a cardboard coffin can still have the look of a traditional funeral

The ebay sale was done as a test to see how much interest there was in selling this way, the coffin ended up going to a production company. At the time the public were obviously not keep on buying a coffin this way, and again until people opt for change and the demand for selling this way increases then it will stay with the traditional way of purchasing from a funeral director when the funeral is arranged.

With regards to postage costs, if you think of how big a coffin actually is then the cost isnt actually high, if the demand for them posting out was higher then the cost would probably decrease.

There must be interest - at least in the US with Walmart and Costco selling them direct. I guess its only a matter of time.

Nice idea. Trouble is we don't plan to use the services of a funeral director so proably won't apply to us.

Can see how this can have cost benefits though.

This very subject was discussed on the radio this morning! It seems that an average funeral costs 3-4K (). According to the prog, because folk tend not to want to think about this stuff (and seem to be concerned with 'what the neighbours think' re a DIY arrangement), it's quite an effort to find out what the regs etc actually are re what you are allowed to do with a body/ where you are allowed to bury/ what a coffin has to be made of/like. Having said that, there was a bloke on who has made his own coffin (£25 of timber, apparently) and will be buried in his own ground, so i guess the information is out there if you are willing to dig for it (I'll get me coat ;)).

The coffin cover seems a practical solution for cremations. The cynic in me notices the 'green' (inflated) price tag for cardboard/wicker - apparently a cardboard coffin can be sourced for about £85, but a lady who has recently arranged a funeral and had the FD's price list in front of her was saying that his price was £425, and not the cheapest of the options available.

Bag and bonfire would suit my body! However, having had the benefit of bodies left to medical research, I may well end up going that way myself. But it's one of those things where you think, "yeah, I'll look into that nearer the time", but without knowing when "the time" will be it'd be easy to not get around to it.
  • Now I'm liking the chocolate box finish on these cardboard ones!

On the radio hey.. would of loved to have heard that one. Was the general concensus then that people would arrange themselves if they knew how to ? I would if I could find one useful resource. I am going to have a look at the natural death centre website and read up further on this subject.

It's also interesting to read the price variations quoted, not only on the radio but in this thread. Huge variances.
