Interestingly I note that some people are buying cardboard coffins in advance - surely these won't last ? I've got several items in storage that I go down to check on now and then. The boxes they are in are ok in situ but I wouldn't want to carry them any great distance, they look / feel soft and weak !

My dad died in January of this year, he had cancer and knew he was dying so in January of 2010 he paid for his funeral, I sat down and sorted it with him. He said he'd seen a documentary and they had wicker coffins and he fancied a one of those, when I told him the price he said "what!!! to hell with that, I'll have the cheapest!"
Then we got to the part about having your body done so people can come and look at you, I could see him mulling this over then he said "nail the bloody lid down, if they cant come and see me now why the hell do they want to see me when I'm dead!"
Next on the list was the funeral car, it was £150 for a car, dads said " when you get to my age you've got a bus pass, if they want to go to the crem they can go by bus, the rest will have to buy a ticket"
Flowers next, "no, no flowers, can't stand the smell of funeral flowers!" I've still not worked out how flowers and funeral flowers smell different?
Last his ashes, "do what the hell you want with them, I'm hardly going to care by then"
The cost was £2300, we did get a family car (£150) after he died, couldn't see myself turning up at my dads funeral on a bus to be honest.

A few months ago I paid for my mums funeral, its the same as dads but with a car and its coming in at nearly £3000, big difference in price.

Hi Fin7, thank you for sharing your story and please accept my sympathies...
I still can't get over just how expensive funeral costs are. I mean 3k for a couple of hours work and a box (was it the cheapest option).... It's got to be one of the highest profit businesses out there.

Yes thats with the cheapest coffin in both cases. the jump in price is quite amazing really. My mum had to go into a home a few months ago, she has alzhiemers, so I thought with the way the cost was shooting up it would be best to pay hers now.

Many years ago I remember my dad telling my mum he was going to make himself a coffin out of orange boxes and store it in the shed!!!

I honestly cannot compute that a funeral costs 3k for a cardboard box, a car, a few flowers and thats about it ! did you get / ask for a break down ?

My brain hurts just thinking about it. Seriosuly considering a change in career !

I would have liked your dad :D

I'd order a coffin online in a second... but I'd make sure it was clear from the shape exactly what it was and hint to the courier that I had vampires in the house :rotfl::rotfl:

I imagine if they were easy to get online, goth/emo teens would all be sleeping in them
Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession :o:o
