I'll try to keep to 100g carb a day, Eric. Breakfast has accounted for 48.7g and that will keep me going for a long time, as well as the protein in our large free-range boiled egg.

If there is no clear correlation between cholesterol and heart disease, then there seems little point in worrying about it! Even less reason to take statins, with all their side effects. I just feel that I need to lower my cholesterol, just to keep my GP happy....

I didn't think that 6.1 was particularly high? There is a history of heart disease in my family, so maybe the GP is just being careful.

Do you lose or maintain on 100g carb per day?

I don't really count my carbs, but I am following a lower carb eating plan, but it advocates lower fat dairy products, lean meat (no chicken skin or that lovely fat that you get on a steak!) But I am ignoring the low fat advice....

At the moment I have switched to soya milk from full fat, as I read that soya lowers cholesterol, still eat butter, but spread very thinly, dark ryvita crispbreads, orchard fruits, green veg, cauli, salads, olive oil dressing.

I will post a daily menu:
    Decaf coffee wih soya milk
Boiled egg, 2 x ryvita dark rye spread with butter

Snack: Benecol yoghurt drink and handful of almonds

Lunch: Butternut squash soup 16g carbs (on the tub)

    Dinner: Will be chicken salad.

    Work days:
Whey protein powder soya milk shake, with teaspoon peanut butter

Salad with cold meat eg ham and hard boiled egg

Dinner: Chicken breasts (with skin)stuffed with cream cheese, garlic mushrooms, side salad.

Snacks: Handful of almonds and an apple; handful of Food doctor snack seeds.

It seems to be working, as I have lost 4lbs in 6 days!

i think the jurys out on soya as its not a natural food for us to eat, i know it lowers testosterone which is not good for a guy :( i certainly have had no issues loosing weight with whole milk

i would give the low carb a go, you should see an improvement in your lipid profile and no 6.1 is not high, mine was 9.8 :D the only one thats important thou is small dense LDL which they rarely measure.

the reason for sticking to around 100g of carbs (400 cals, low GI) a day goes like this, with high levels of insulin in the blood you can not burn fat you also store all spare sugar as fat, regardless of how much you eat, they have injected mice with insulin and got them to starved to death whilst remaining obese!! they could not burn there stored body fat and burned all there muscle and organs until they died even thou they where being over feed at the time

you are also trying deplete your glycogen stores so that your body is forced to burn fat rather than using those glycogen stores, this is what most "attack" phases try to do, drain the glycogen stores as fast as possible, its too extreme imo

i personally try to avoid grains as much as i can as i now know they are a trigger for my IBS

Feeling a bit frustrated at the minute as I am having a bit of trouble with my knees and I am worried that it will stop me porgressing with the excercise as much as I want.
They started to 'niggle' a few weeks ago after using the treadmill and weight training 3 times a week. I started taking glucosamine and things improved a bit.
Then last week I started on the C25K. No pain when running or walking, but pain above my knees when standing. Began to use knee supports which seemed to help as well.
Because they were 'niggling' after running I decided to dust my bike off and go for a ride. Big mistake - again no pain when riding, but lots of pain afterwards. I have been icing my knees and taking Ibupofen after excercise.
It seems to ease off, but then start again after the next session of excercise.
I am wondering whether it is best to rest for a longer period of time to see if this will help, or is this something that you have to get used to if you take regular excercise?

  • Ok so I can see a gain coming this week :eek: Easter and my Birthday mixed together with lovely weather and lots of surfing equals me eating far too much good food but I must admit I have had a great weekend :D
I'm gonnna need a good run in the morning to burn off the birthday cake, but not eaten my cadbury's cream egg yet. But I can't put too many lb's on as I brought a dress today for my best friends birthday party and it fit's perfectly (6 dress sizes smaller then I used to be) so I am a very happy bunny :)

Eric - well done on the extra run :T

Sary - I love Rhubarb crumble I hope you enjoyed yours :D Mine is growing but not enough to pick yet but I hope to have some in the next few weeks
    Restarting C25K in 2014 - Week 8 - 1/3 completed

Need to loose 25lb / 3lb lost so far :(

    Hi Jess,

I have trouble with my knees too. Are you warming up and cooling down when exercising - and also are you doing stretching as part of those?

I've not exercised for a couple of weeks now as one of my knees jarred when exercising and hurt a bit. Now that is almost better I'll be starting to exercise - but will take it slowly and build up to the level I was at - sometimes if you start going full steam it can start the injury off again.

I have to cool down and also stretch as I always have problems otherwise.

my knees are bad (they click and creak every like a rusty door every step i go upstairs...) and my GP Told me that some light running will be good for them, i would go and get yours checked with your GP that its ok for you to run

I will say that I do stretch properly before hand and I try to let them rest between runs, If they ache I wont run, I also only run on a treadmill with a very good impact absorbing deck and I have running shoes that are like marshmallow to help absorb even more of the shock

    :j :T that's great :)

    Welcome Minniethemoocher

Hope everyone had a :easter: and a lovely bank holiday weekend - wow it was a hot one wasn't it - got a nice tan going on now after 2 days at the seaside and 2 in the garden!

Any sort of diet went out the window this weekend - lots of family meals and chocolate! there's a giant bar of dairy milk in my fridge now (not an easter egg ) so this week i'll be mostly avoiding it - might stick it in OH's work bag!

Knee's still a bit painful - it's a cartilage issue apparently according to the internet! (ahem, sary!) so I am resting it - tried to jog a bit yesterday and it still hurts, like a kind of stabby feeling at the side of the joint. :(

I would like to do a North vs South again fred I think I need a challenge to get me motivated again! thanks

My knees click as well (didn't realise it meant they were bad ) as I still go out jogging and do high impact exercises  and it don't hurt. I take some strong bones vitamins ;)
