You don't need any user name or password to access and download free apps from the android market.

Can you access the internet from the phone normally?

You do need a google account as downloads are paired to the account for future access, When I had a HTC hero running eclair it wouldnt let me download without a google account, My partners galaxy s is the same

OP if you don't get any luck here, ask over on XDA developers they blend phones for fun haha

Menu -> Settings -> USB -> Samsung Kies to make Kies understand it.

However you say your daughter has a Google apps account (3rd party email on google) so she entered that when it asked for a google account? If so, Android market will go all hissy

So set your phone to use the native google account (@gmail or @googlemail) by going to
Menu -> Settings -> Accounts and Sync -> Add account (if you can't see an account with a G on the left handside) or if you do, delete it then add the native google one.

Its a good phone otherwise aint it! If you need it unlocking PM me as I know how to do them for free!!

PS, don't use Kies unless absolutely needed, on the USB menu change it to USB mass storage and then you can just drag and drop!

Right my daughter has just come home. Done what you said above and it's still not working.

The only thing she has in the accounts page is her facebook account.

I went add account and clicked on google. Input username and password. It then comes up saying phone needs to communicate with google servers to set up account.

However it doesn't work and the same error as in post one appears:
You don't have a network connection.

This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. Please try again when connected to a mobile network, or connect to a wi-fi network. If the problem continues, call customer care.

I definitely have a network connection.

Tried connecting through mass storage and my computer, however my laptop is not recognising the phone. As stated earlier in the thread, usb is definitely working as it is charging the phone.

Who is your network provider? is it post pay or pre pay?

Are you connecting to the internet via wifi or over the HSDPA/3G/GPRS/EDGE network?

and as for the unlocking as long as it runs android then yes it should work :)

on the browser can you get to orange world? http://orangeworld.co.uk

I'm thinking OrangeSafeguard is blocking access to the market

Actually, if you go into about phone, does it say on software version 2.1 update1? As my partner had exactly the same issue on his when it updated

From my experience of Orange, They automatically opt most sims in, even if they say they don't. Simple test is to flick over to wifi and see if you can access the market, if you can, its either safeguard, network or an APN setting problem, else its looking like a device/update/setting issue

    Thanks for your help.

I have checked my account settings and safeguard is off. The orange site is saying there is a new firmware 2.2 for the phone (currently 2.1-update 1) however, as previously explained can't connect to Kies to update.
