What makes up these regulations can often be completely pointless. Much of it is pure common sense, which we have to remind people off, stick posters up, and send them on training courses to make sure they carry out common sense.
Because if they don't use their noggin, you can often find theres a court or tribunal case. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Hmm...I really do think you live on different planet. Yes, let's trust these businesses to behave responsibly and fairly. We won't create any laws that stop them from exploiting their workforce, we'll just ask nicely. :wall:
I'm sorry?
I've had to send people on a whole afternoons training course, showing them how to lift boxes and walk up stairs.
They have been trained, assessed and certified to be capable of carrying out these tasks.
What happened before this? What happened at home, when they decided to pop to argos and buy something? What happened when they came across steps in the town? Did they see them, stop, look and scratch their heads?
No ones talking about letting employers exploit their workforce, but for gods sake, will you just TRY to stay on the same track as everyone else, instead of completely going to another extreme, disrupting any conversation flow with sheer pedantry.0 -

No one needs to be sent on a course to learn how to "walk up stairs." Stop being silly. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Or the alternative (which is happening) is that some go bust and many just up sticks and set up elsewhere. Therefore no jobs for British workers.0 -
It would help if you explained why you think these rafts of legislation are pointless.
How should the government collect these taxes then? Ask people to send them a cheque?
I believ the USA us emainly self assessment with a yearly return and massive penalties for fiddling.
If businesses are being made to be the tax collectors in the UK, they should be paid for teh amount of work involved. (VAT and PAYE)0 -
Yep, maternity pay, working hours directives, environmental regulations, ... all pointless legislation, innit?
That was a silly post, ILW :rotfl:
Tell me why it is necessary. It just discourages businesses and hampers them when trying to compete with foreign competition. As said before, without private companies and individuals making a profit, there is no money for a public sector.0 -

Businesses have, for many many years, collected tax at source on behalf of the government. It has been going on for a very, very long time. In fact, it is how most global governments collect taxes. Do you really expect people to send the money to Ozzy, to put in the cash tin, at the bottom of the drawer? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

It is the way milions of self employed and small business do it.0
