What about chucking money at the private sector? Might that help?

Left to it's own devices, teh private sector will do fine. Many of it's problems come from rafts of pointless legislation and the fact that large chunks of it's profits are taken away in taxes rather than being used for expansion and creating employment.

Or by letting the private sector keep more of the money it makes?

Therefore depriving the taxpayer of what is rightly theirs.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Working hours directive, maternity pay, various reporting that is required, complicated employment legislation, waste regulation legislation etc etc, need I go on.

Plus small busnesses are expected to be unpaid tax collectors for the government.

Or by perhaps giving them the means to employ more taxpayers if that is what makes business sense ;)

No, the titles of these regulations are not pointless....but you completely miss the point.

What makes up these regulations can often be completely pointless. Much of it is pure common sense, which we have to remind people off, stick posters up, and send them on training courses to make sure they carry out common sense.

Because if they don't use their noggin, you can often find theres a court or tribunal case.

It would help if you explained why you think these rafts of legislation are pointless.

How should the government collect these taxes then? Ask people to send them a cheque?
