Ooh, White_Sapphire, I hope he doesn't see this board and realise how well behaved he is! He might start asking to be let out of his cage more often :rotfl:

Just a word of caution regarding orchids, they squash VERY easily and droop faster than other flowers. For the uses you've said they should be OK - just make sure you have a vase filled with water handy all day for your bouquet so you can perk them up if they start to wilt. I would definitely advise against having them as buttonholes (I know you haven't mentioned using them for this though) as after one hug they go all floppy and look pants :( I went to a wedding not so long ago where they spent around 12k on flowers (don't ask, this is the kind of wedding I go too ) and they had orchid bouquets, buttonholes and corsages and they all fell apart before the wedding breakfast :(.

Thanks hun, I wasn't aware of that! I'd forgotten about buttonholes, tbh - I won't be able to use sweet peas either as they're very delicate. Probably go for fake then; at least I can do them earlier, one less thing to do in a mad panic at the last minute!

I'm sorry, £12k on flowers????? Was it Elton John's wedding? :rotfl:

:heart::heart: Marrying my lovely man on 1st September 2012 :heart::heart:

The right to express an opinion does not override the responsibility to show respect. :)
  • my ring came :( its not as dark as i thought it would be and the stones tiny compared to my engagement ring, i still love it though and couldnt imagine having any other one, it is from tiffanys new york after all:happyhear
I am not bossy I just have better ideas:p
  • Fawny did you hear back about your venues? Hope so :) bet it will be gorgeous! A bit sunnier than Aberdeen I would have thought!!

White Sapphire we're going to the Lake District (dont' ask me where all I know is it's a 5 hours drive) Cannot wait though looks blissful log fire and the rest!! A week of walking eating nice food and watching dvd's I would have thought :)!!

Amybettb so chuffed for you you've got your dress it's the best bit :) resist trying it on keep it pristine!!!

What are foam flowers like? Are the actual flowers foam?! I need to google this and have a nose. I am just not that buzzed about fresh flowers so why pay the premium for them? I'm not a flowery type person...a cheap bunch please me as much as anything!!

Scotsbride I've lost just over 3 stone in the last year thanks to weight watchers and starting a couch to 5k app last August which has led me to run a 10k this coming Sunday!! It's not been easy and it's been a lot of hard work and at times missing out on things but it has really been worth all the hard work as I feel so much better!!!! Also I am same re kilt etc. OH is happy to wear it and can't wait to buy one but a powder blue suit had been discussed....I told him it's his day too and to wear what he wants!! I would laugh my head off if I walked in and he was in something ridiculous!!

Oh bubbles glad your ring is here and you are happy with it!! Big stress over :)

I bought a sample of place settings today and emailed my venue about chocolate fountain and text a hairdresser so that's a good few things ticked off!!!

  • Foam flowers are exactly that - they're made of soft thin foam, and yes - I think they look much nicer than silk too! Plus, with artificial flowers, you can get almost any flower in almost any colour you want (some come at a premium though!)
I think we're going to get ours from Dunelm and Hobbycraft (a mix of the two to get the best deal/colours/designs!)

Congrats on the weight loss! I'm slowly trying to prod myself back into weight-loss habits - am going swimming again now! But my OH keeps buying tastytasty GU desserts! I have no willpower! Mind you - I can't lose TOO much because my dress fits perfectly right now, and I don't want to fork out for a whole re-fitting! hmmmn...

Has anyone looked into suits? We'll be needing 6 of them (groom, TWO best men, my teenage brother as usher, and fathers of bride and groom).
Moss Bros do a deal where if you hire 5, the groom goes free - so (with one junior suit) that'll be £340 for trousers, jackets and waistcoats only.
Then there's a company called Formally Yours - who do the whole suit (trousers, jacket, waistcoat, shirt, tie and handkerchief) for £57 flat-rate price - so that's £342 the lot.

We're buying ties and handkerchiefs separately to match the bridesmaids' dresses, so we don't strictly NEED the full suit. Plus, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask everyone to provide their own white dress shirt and black dress shoes.

So I'm wondering what's the better deal! or if there's an even better deal out there! any ideas?
    Life on a shoestring!
  • TheSeventh are you then going to make up the bouquets yourself?! Hmm I had a look at the thread about doing your own wedding flowers and I'm just not sure I would manage? I do love that idea as would make them that bit more special and of course cheaper :money: I may give a prototype a go and see how it goes. Woul djust worry about it falling to bits with my shoddy workmanship :p

I think people providing own shoes is a good idea as then you know they will fit correctly and the person will be comfortable. Perhaps provide boot polish for morning of the wedding though ;) Also I think a white shirt is not an unreasonable request everyone has a white shirt surely? Perhaps try to haggle a bit more with the one where the groom goes free or haggle with the other and ask for a discount as you don't need the ties/hankies and see what they say?

Or is this what I would use to put it together?! I LOVE YOU LADIES!! This is a possibility now!!!! XXXXXXX

  • That looks like a brilliant base for a bouquet!
I was thinking of lots of florists' wire and florists' tape (covered up with pretty ribbon, of course)

There's a year to go yet, so plenty of time to buy the flowers and play about. It it works, then great! put them aside until the big day - if not, keep trying, or fall back on asking a florist how much to arrange the flowers I've already bought!
    Life on a shoestring!
  • Florist's tape...ok and then the pretty ribbon on top when it's all tied tightly? I'd worry about a stem falling out of the oasis and folk seeing my terrible secret haha!! I think I might buy a few bits and bobs and have a bash and see how it looks!! Ebay seem to have lots of options for the foam flowers and like you say so flexible for the colours. Good thinking re falling back on a florist for some help!!

Ok I have a bit more confidence with this now thank you so much!!! xxxx
What's fur ye won't go by ye!
  • Just buy some bits and go for it - you'll surprise yourself!

My OH is getting used to coming into the living room to find me surrounded by a sea of crafting stuffs. he just says "weddinging?" and i say, guiltily "...yup..." and he grins and clears a space to sit, hehe.
    Life on a shoestring!
