Cat litter - 4 indoor only cats

Options
So....

I was using PAT wood based cat litter to start with:

... and realised I was going through 3-4 bags (30 litres each) per month so asked for advice on here about other litters.

Tried Catsan:

6510.jpg

which was ok but not really what I was looking for - with 4 indoor cats I was still going through a lot.

Then tried PAT own brand clumping one

...and as it was first time I used a clumping cat litter for my cats it was an experience. Very fine, sand like texture but again, 1 bag lasted 3 days as now I got 2 massive trays (21cm deep, from Zooplus - size of a baby bath but they STILL manage to paw the litte out of them - sigh)

33698_trixie_cleany_cat_1.jpg

Those trays need t be filled to 5cm depth so the clumping 5litre bag was just for 2 traye for one fill. With 4 cats it had to be completely changed after 3 days.

Overall, trying those 3 litters, I have recently ordered 10 bags of the wood based again (as now on offer at PAH, 2 bags for £16) and had it delivered (if looks could kill I would be dead by now... poor courier...) as cost wise I did nto see any benefit in changing between those 3.

When that finishes, I would like to go back to clumping litter - luckily my cats do not care what is in the litter box, I know some are fussy with that but my 4 really do not so can change for whatever is on offer.

The reason would nto be the cost (same really) but the space - those bags are much smaller and easier to manage while the 30 litre wood based litter ones are just massive...

For the experts on cumping litter - a question please:

It did clump ok but it also was getting stuck to the bottom/sides of the tray which was hard to manage as I was forever digging in those boxes and scraping the clumps off. Is this normal?

Are all clumping litter os sand consistency? I only used PAH own one so really do not know? Quite liked that consistency.

Is there a clumping litter than CAN be flushed down the loo? The PAG one should not...

Thanks a lot :)

    Oh, just found this one:

    22307.jpg

And some reviews are from people with 4 cats claiming they only use 2 bags per month - wondering if those are indoor only cats.... sigh....

Will order 2 bags and see how it goes...

And 1 bag of thise one, for research purpose....

  • I use Aldi's cluming litter, costs £1.79 for 10 litres, isn't as sand like in texture as other I have tried. I only had 1 tray for my 1 indoor cat but it is a big one (underbed storage box) & 1 bag will last me/him 2 weeks. I find it easier to clean out the lumps when there is more litter in there, the clump tends to be surrounded by litter instead of stuck to the sides etc. With respects to kicking litter out, I dont think anything will stop them doing that! I have read about putting the tray inside another box so that would catch it. However I find Tigger tends to walk bits off in his toes! I keep the tray in the en suite which has a tilled floor & I keep a dustpan & brush under the sink & seem to constently be sweeping up litter, sometime I really wish I could teach him to use the loo!!
  • I use Biocatlet, PAH sell it, and it's definitely the best I've ever used, but it is non clumping.

We've tried a flushable...but felt too risky flushing it.

We usually have two cats one litter box (up until recently). So, same ration of cat to tray.

Depth IS vital...that what stops the clump happening before it hits the bottom.

How often are you scooping for lumps....we scoop once or twice daily...so would suggest you do it twice a day. And we VERY RARELY have to do a complete litter change.

Without doubt we fine Moonlight clumping litter the best, clumpiest and smallest litter use, but not sure about cheapest...it feels very expensive buying it.

We've tried that cat's best one you are trying out, and its a reasonable second best, but we found we we're complete replacing more often

we're trying the kitten version of that clean and tidy one atm...which has a ''herbal attractant''. Its....ok. Its cheaper than the other two, but we find it very smelly to manage and it doesn't go as far. We find we are complete changing fortnightly BUT that's because the cat we bought it for (not one of our two) gets through a lot because she had HUGE widdles (kidney and bowel problems) so she's thoroughly testing all our litter choices. And the other thing with that one is it tracks REALLY badly. ATM they all seem to be, even moonlight which I used to find didn't, so maybe its our flooring or the feral cat.

I much prefer clumoing litters to any other type, but the economy and smell management is in the regular scooping...its a fine balance, scooping regularly enough to get it before cats have had to reuse too many times, but leaving it long enough to clump firmly. The cat's best one needs longer to clump, moonlight clumps IMMEADIATELY to solid: so if someone could scoop four or five times a day (or lots of people check once or twice each.) you'd get nice clean, firm, undisturbed clumps, so the ''bed'' of litter would stay clean and not needing complete change so often. But you do need to top up to keep it full, and scoop, scoop, scoop. :)

Good luck finding the right one for you and your cats :)

I use Catsan and one of these....... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8702410/Trail/searchtext%3ECAT.htm
They are brilliant because they are enclosed so you dont get litter on the floor.

I bought one of these but my 10yr old cat wouldn't use it.:( Maybe a young cat would as it would be all it was ever used to.:)

Ours like covered trays...which helps with any scratching over the edges, but they still track litter through the door. Putting it so the entrance/exit is by a mat helps a bit, but tbh, I still end up using a dustpan/brush or hoover daily in front of litters. (and we have five litter trays atm. :()

Excellent advice from someone on this board (I'm sorry I cannot remember who) was to use high sided storage box, plastic, so that its not closed but it is high walled....for claustrophobic or exhibitionist cats :)

    I have 2 cats - one 5 yo & 1 3yo

I have tried EVERY litter product availbe in small and large pet shops. And the thing that works best for me and is most cost effective is

clean & tidy - the multi cat one

It clumps brilliantly, and lasts and lasts as I on;y fully clean out the tray every 2-3 weeks as long as you are daily removing poo and clumps obviously and then refill as necessary.

With normal catsan I was using a bag a week or more as the tray stunk after 3 or 4 days and I cleaned fully out by day 6.

I have got small trays now as I found it made no difference to the cats if huge or medium.

My younger cat is odd though, he pees with his backside hanging out the tray most the time so hitting the floor, he is stupid but very beautiful - and he has doe this with all the litters, fine for poo as he gets completely in!

  • I don't like clumping litter as I find it really dusty. Tried a few brands but the one I liked the least was Catsan. I bought a bag of litter from Home Bargains that were like crystals. I wish that I remember the name of it and that was really good and lasted for a while as well.

I HATED catsan, threw half a bag out it was so bad!

I love the Okoplus stuff you have ordered - best litter i have found by a country mile.

ETA - my cat is indoor only.
