12 to 24 week pregnancy thread

Hi ladies,
sorry for being a bit AWOL, I've been at the in-laws for the best part of a week. It's been (mostly) nice, they've been fussing over me and feeding me up :rotfl:
Just popped in to say that after a (very long due to a very wriggly baby) gender scan, we're definitely team pink! It was lovely to see and feel her being so active, and know that I wasn't going mad and imagining all those movements. She has very long legs so I fully expect her to take after her daddy... so excited!
Hope you start to feel better soon Vic, Lola, Kerri and anyone else I've accidentally missed out xx0 -
Hi, I apologise for barging in on your thread like this, but I was hoping you could help me or give me some advice. I'm 6+5, am a little afraid of joining any thread officially, afraid of counting my chickens until at least 12 weeks and scans come back good.
Am slightly older (I'd fit in the geriatric mother category!) and bothered about Down's. Am considering paying for the new Harmony test which is expensive, to perhaps avoid likelihood of amnio but it's still so new I know it may not be 100% reliable anyway, the problem is it needs to be carried out before a Nuchal fold test so I need to make up my mind without knowing any results I'd have got on the NHS.
My question is, when you get back your results from Nuchal Fold test and the accompanying blood tests, how are the results given to you, ie, breakdown of different blood readings, nasal bone, nuchal fold reading and would anyone mind (sorry, I don't know if this is personal or not) saying what results you got for your ratios, for instance if everyone's getting 1:10000, that would pretty much put my mind at rest. The reason I'm asking is that, for instance, if it turns out that say 10% of people get a 'higher risk' reading then I know there is a good chance I'd be recalled for an amnio, which I'm desperate to avoid unless necessary so more likely to consider the expensive private Harmony option.
Really, just about any advice or info would be really appreciated right now. Thank you:)0 -
Hi - congrats on your pregnancy. I'm 42 & 27 weeks pg. each health auth gives the results differently. I didn't get a ratio. My letter just said low risk and no further tests recommended.
Also, I assume you have thought about what you would do if results did show high risk?0 -

After the test I was told if there was a problem they would ring me if not then they would send me the results in the post. They sent me a letter which said something like 1 in 6,730 (I can't remember the exact number). I'm in work so can't tell you exactly, but I remember it was 6,000 something and it said this was low risk.
I can see why you would be eager to have a test, but I would say be cautious about taking the results too seriously. My friend was told she had a very high likelyhood of having a child with Down's after the test, they sent her for counselling and stuff. She isn't one for abortion as that was banded around, she said she wanted the child regardless and then her son was born and there was absolutely nothing wrong with him. She was put through a lot of stress for nothing.
At the same time my best friend's sister has Down's, her mum had all the tests and nothing was picked up. They love her to bits, but my bf seriously thinks her mum might have chosen a different route as she's older and already had 3 children. A hard thing to admit, but she is so much more hard work than the other 3 who are quite a bit older. Plus there is the stress of thinking of the future, my bf keeps telling me she is never going to have children as she has to look after her sister when her mother passes away as her brothers won't. A very large undertaking and a huge sacrifice. I have tried to persuade her that her sister wouldn't want that and there is no reason not to have children as her sister will be of an age where she can almost look after herself when anything does happen to her mother.
I would have a chat with your mw and see what they say. They should be able to advise you the best.Got married 13/11/10

Thank you both. I have thought as to what I'd do if the child had down's and although I'm still not sure, I seriously question my ability to look after a child with such needs. I also know a girl, I don't know what her medical condition is exactly though she's dependent on a wheelchair. I was told, (again don't know if it's definitely true), that her condition was caused by testing for Down's while her mum was pregnant with her so am worried about the amnio for this kind of reason as well as miscarriage.
I understand that the Harmony test, if they can get get enough baby DNA, is very accurate (either 1:10000 or >99%) than the standard testing and is totally non invasive. Some mixed reviews on forums though... Truth is, I can't really afford the private test and it's still in the exploratory stages, but am so scared of harming the baby in case I get called up for an amnio that I'll probably pay it, just that it's so new there's not been a great deal of trialing of the Harmony test yet so my head's swimming at the mo.0 -
I believe that private places do a quad blood test as well for more markers than the NHS, which may be an option instead of the harmony test. I think ani977 had it at This Is My as she recommended them to me for a private scan
Unfortunately though, whilst it might be more accurate it will only ever tell you your risk- not a definite yes/no. Your risk be 1 in 100,000 but you could be that 1 as I was told by two different midwives, although that's probably covering their butts as they found getting the measurement difficult
Hope everyone's had a good weekend, off to treat myself at the trafford centre this afternoon, looking forward to that
Hope those who are sick are being well looked after and are feeling better soon
Yay for team pink Amy, glad all is wellLittle Lowe born January 2014 at 36+6

Found out yesterday that we're team pink
Lola, hope you feel better soon. Yoghurt might help the thrush, not sure about the sciatica though.
KScarlet, I've had this before but I think it was only mild. I remember the gyno telling me I had it. They didn't give me anything for it though, hope you feel better soon.
Vic3, that's rubbishhope you start to feel better soon too. When my IBS plays up I just try to eat fresh fruit and veg and stay away from all the processed rubbish.
OH had a wonderful picnic yesterday, although decamped to the house. Went out for roast today and been lazing so need to get a wriggle on and pack up the house before moving day on Friday.
Was amazing seeing baby on the scan yesterday, I kept crying when I found out she was a girl. So excited and my sister is over the moon. We've got a lovely 7+ min DVD of the scan, which is great as I forgot so much of it. £75 well spent I saythey've given a discount off the next scan, although unsure if we'll have a 3d scan but then again 20 weeks is a long time to wait between the last scan and meeting her. Her heartbeat is now recorded in a teddybear and it's sooo strong.
They've moved my date forward though, I'm not 18w today instead of 17+3 eep! Getting closer to a xmas baby argh!!!
Hugs to those that need them xxxDiary: Getting back on track for 2013 and beyondDEBT FREE 13-10-13 :dance::dance::dance::dance:

Congratulations on being pink Amy. I was wondering where you had gone!
So sorry to hear you're in the wars Vic! Hope you're feeling better soon.
Scarlet - No experience of BV. Maybe try the big thread?
To the lady who asked about about Downs risk; If you are certain you would not continue a downs pregnancy I think you have little option but to pay for the Harmony test if you want to avoid an amnio. Did you mention your age? Sorry, I'm typing this from the previous page.
Kerri - You're due date won't change I'm afraid. The accuracy of scans declines quite rapidly after 13 weeks so stick with your original date as that's what the hospital will use. Congratulations on being pink also
Afm, I've been discussing stuff with OH today and I'm really panicking about everythingHe said he thought I was worse this time than I was with DS. Great! Nearly half way.....37 weeks feels like a very very long way away
