Hello All :j
Bit behind with thread so just a quick post.
Good luck to those with scans tomorrow ! Gilly & Twigpig and anyone else I have missed.
Been to see Gp this morning, my boy is on the smaller side but she is not sure of my fundal height measurement due to flab!!!!!! does this mean I can eat more chocolate????!!!
Some reading/distraction for you, my friend emailed me this list of things she found she needed/were useful it was given to her by a work colleague thought you might like to peruse it!!!!!!! I think there is a hospital list on the main pregnancy thread too not sure about general lists though. Thanks to my friends friend!!!! as I am finding it useful to read.
Hospital Bag
Labour:
- Something to wear (unless they just give you a hospital gown) – ok for feeding after birth
- slippers
- TENS machine (rent from Boots / mothercare etc)
- camera
- energy food: I couldn’t eat anything but sweets were good, opal fruits, fruit pastels etc.
- drink: lucozade, full sugar squash etc.
- underwear you don’t mind throwing away
- maternity pads
- wash kit (incl flannel)
- set of clothes for baby (vest, sleep suit, scratch mitts & hat)
- couple of nappies
- lip balm (apparently essential if you have gas-in-air)
- pillow (have a ‘unique’ pillow case so you can tell it’s yours and not the hospitals!)
- towel
Afterwards (depends how long they keep you in but..):
- something to sleep in that’s ok to breastfeed in
- lightweight dressing gown
- slippers
- comfy clothes (if they keep you in) & something to wear going home – will still need maternity size
- maternity pads (1 or 2 packs)
- nursing bra
- disposable knickers (you can get packs of 5!) or ones you don’t mind throwing away
- coins for TV/phone etc
- wash kit (go for unscented soap)
- extra towel
For baby:
- at least 4 sets of clothes (vests / sleepsuits / scratch mits / hat)
- something to go home in (incl coat or jumper & hat)
- blanket
- couple of muslin squares (good for mopping up dribble!)
- pack of nappies (try Pampers No 1 New Baby)
- baby wipes (or cotton wool)
- small towel
For OH:
Depends how long labour lasts for, but maybe have a change of clothes / wash kit / book / money / food for OH.
Stuff to Get:
Clothes:
Go for cheap and lots, and easy to wash. Check the sizes as the newborn only lasted a couple of weeks on my son.
Vests: lots (we were easily changing my son 6 times a day to start off with).
Sleepsuits: lots. Good ones are the ones with the built in scratch mitts
Scratch mitts: essential for my son as he kept chewing his hands and scratching his face! Ordinary mitts didn’t stay on though – we used socks, much better.
Coat / jumper: we’ve still only got 1 jumper for my son – but baby will grow so quickly it’s not worth spending a lot of money on them.
Other clothes: avoid anything with a waist band while baby is only a few weeks old, dungarees great (get cheap ones when little), socks.
Essential items for breastfeeding:
- lansohil cream (think that’s what it’s called – the cream in the purple tube for cracked nipples – essential right from the start!)
- breast pads
- nursing bras
- breast pump if expressing (don’t bother with the hand pumps – nightmare! I’ve got a Philips Avent electric one which was recommended by a friend)
- bottles & steriliser if expressing or ‘topping up’ with formula
- I had a couple of cartons of formula just in case (any, but Aptamil seems the most popular)
Sleeping:
Moses basket: essential.
Sheets: fitted sheets for moses basket (can easily change twice a day!) so need at least 4. Also get a couple of flat sheets to cover baby.
Blankets: at least two (we probably use 4 by the time we’ve got 2 for sleeping, 1 in the pram and 1 around the house), moses basket size (the next size up are massive)
Sleeping bags: some people swear by these but we still use sheet & blanket – nightmare to change nappy in a sleeping bag.
Hot water bottle or something similar: My son hated going into a cold bed, so we used to heat it up with a microwavable beany thing before we put him in it – then he was happy!
My son grew out of the moses basket at about 6 weeks, so he’s now in a crib. This’ll probably last for a couple more months and then we’ll put him in a cot. The crib has been great, but only because he’s too big for the basket and the cot wouldn’t fit in our bedroom, and I don’t want him out in the other room just yet! Most other NCT babies my sons age (9 weeks) are still in the basket, and will probably just go straight into a cot. Cot massive though – really glad we’ve got the crib. Don’t need to buy anything other than the moses basket to start off with though.
Other bits and bobs:
- change mat: essential
- change bag: essential!
- nappies / nappy sacks (we haven’t bothered with a posh nappy bin but some people do)
- cotton wool
- baby wipes – couple of packs to start off with
- nappy rash cream (sudocrem) just in case
- muslin squares: essential. Get at least 10!
- Infacol (for burps – even the breastfeeding mums use this. There’s also ’Gripe Water’ but nightmare to administer)
- dimmer switch in nursery
- baby bath: I thought this would be a waste of money but has actually been essential
- towelling cradle for use in the bath: this was really good to start off with, but too small now. Will be useful when we have to use the big bath though, quite cheap so possibly worth getting.
- baby bubble bath: essential (when you see the poo stains!) DON’T use Johnsons (lots of complaints that it dries out the skin), we’ve got InfaCare which has been fine
- ‘snuggle robes’: essential for us, these are just small towels with a built in hood which are great since ordinary towels are too big. Try a pack of 3.
- baby gym play mat: essential, but only really need after a couple of weeks.
- bouncy chair: essential, so can put baby down without being flat. Most have a vibrate mode but my son doesn’t like it
- swing / rotating chair etc: some mums have got these, put the baby in and it either swings or rocks baby. Really good for babies that don’t settle well, but not worth getting unless you need it – we haven’t got one.
- toys: my son still isn’t really interested in toys etc. Only bother buying when he gets a bit older.
- baby monitor: essential if baby is in a different room, eg when we put my son to bed and we’re downstairs. Def get one where the parent monitor is mobile, if poss get one that gives you the room temperature too.
- room thermometer: nightmare trying to work out what the baby should be wearing at night without one (we just use the free NHS one that came in a Bounty pack). Apparently the posh ‘Glo eggs’ are not very accurate.
- pram: carry cot essential for us, the pram does go flat (essential for newborn) but it’s not well padded so doesn’t seem very comfy which is why we use the carry cot which just slots on instead. If using a car seat check that it’s all compatible.
phew its a long list :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:!!!!!!!!!!0 -

Morning Toniq
excited to see my little boy again today.
It's not that warm here, but then it never is! It was nice yesterday, warm with a cool breeze. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
Morning mozzy - I can't remember how many weeks you are, is is about 20/21? I'm 22+2 today and I've only really had any feeling of movement in the last 7-10 days, and only one event of proper kicking on Sunday. Midwife won't even worry about any checks until you're 28 weeks so take some comfort that some of us are just later than usual. Try not to worry
I slept better last night than I did before my 12 week scan. Looking forward to seeing the beanie again and making sure they're developing well. Still firmly on team yellow :rotfl:
Ro - That's an excellent list. Thanks for posting it upTTC #3..........0 -

Good luck for today Twigpig. You must be excited
I am. I feel less nervous, as I can feel the beanie moving around. If I'd gone for my scan at 20 weeks, I'd have been a wreck! Hopefully we'll get the news that everything is going well. I want to go shopping! :rotfl:
Will be thinking about you at 11am. Keza will have her bump out right nowTTC #3..........0 -
