The GTT test. Here's what I know about it. Can't say it's gospel though. Just what I've read from another baby board and stuff. Mine is in about 6-7 weeks........
There are generally a 1 hour test and a 3 hour test. In some areas, they may have you do the 1 hour test and if you don't pass, then you'd have to do the 3 hours test. In some areas, they might just make you do the 3 hours test first off.....
You need to fast before the test, so no breakfast that day. (Great for us with nausea when we don't eat......) On arrival, you'll have to drink a sugary substance and then a blood sample is taken at 1, 2 & 3 hour intervals to check if you have processed the sugar as normal. If you fail, you have gestational diabetes. In most women this goes away after birth and does not progress to diabetes.
If you fail the test, then your body isn't processing sugars properly and you need to follow a set diet to ensure your baby doesn't get too large. If the diet doesn't control the baby's size, then they can also medicate. That's about all I know so far. Hope I pass it when I go for mine, lol
PS - Pack a sandwich so you can eat as soon as your test is over. Plan for a few hours away from work, as it's won't be a quick in and outTTC #3..........0 -

I just assumed they'd dip the urine - after all, they diagnosed my Nan's dog like that so it must work for humans! Guess I'll have to ask at my next scan, as I've noticed I'm really thirsty and getting through about 3x my pre-pregnancy amount of water, but just assumed they were testing the urine each time and I was fine...
Yay about your travel system arriving!
Extra fluid is needed in pregnancy anyway.. when you consider the baby needs it.. and the amniotic fluid needs refilling and the extra blood you need to produce and extra sweating, as lovely as it is being that bit warmer and heavier means you do perspire more.
I have taken to drinking oasis and if REALLY desperate I will drink ribena.. but I am going through maybe an extra 1-1.5Litres a day.. on top of my usual 5 pints of tea!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Gilly - it is the oyster we've ordered (well, got now) in red. Can't wait to see it. Not sure where it will be living for the next few months, the spare room (in theory the nursery, but currently more likely to have stuff we haven't put away properly and sleeping cats in it) has gained a load of bags and boxes from donated stuff already.
The GTT was suggested to me just because of BMI as I don't have any family history. May ask if they are testing with a dipstick anyway because if so I'd prefer not to get messed with more than necessary. I'll try and remember to ask at my 25 week appt, but I'd better ring to book one first!
Pigpen, I'm with you on the oasis, but also drinking loads of apple juice, vimto, or chocolate milk depending on my mood. Right now I want chocolate, so obv I only brought juice to work.:heartpuls Daughter born January 2012 :heartpuls Son born February 2014 :heartpuls

I like the Oyster, I'm jealous you get your pram now! I'm tempted to phone M&P's and ask them to deliver it sooner, but I know it's a stupid ideaThe frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0

The logical thing would be to take it to my mum and dad's for storage, but I want to play with it first!
Baby has been dancing around loads today, so perhaps she knows I'm all excited!!:heartpuls Daughter born January 2012 :heartpuls Son born February 2014 :heartpuls

I'm fairly sure that it has to be a blood test, but no harm in askingTTC #3..........0 -
