in barnados where I work they have xmas cards with a picture of a plate full of green brussell sprouts on the front!! We were taking bets that we would not sell them as they are far from the usual 'festive' cards but we have sold loads, people think they are fun, quirky and non offensive to anyone. xxxx

Phew, what a relief!! Your title nearly gave me a heart attack! ( My OH is asian and a non-practising muslim). Will you come and be our neighbours please or we'll come and move in next door to you on the other side. You both sound absolutely lovely neighbours. It's been a very long time since I've seen such warmth. :T
  • whilst yes its refreshing that a neighbour wants to set off on the right foot i think its a sad reflection on society that we feel we have to tred on eggshells where people/faith are/is concerned.
When things in life start to weigh heavy on your shoulders, and people all around are having a go, just smile and think.......Fxxk em!

The only thing my neighbour gave me when I moved in was a bill for my share of getting the gutter cleaned. It was done before I moved in.

I have had 4 letters in the post asking about where there money is. It is £15 (£60/4).

The neighbours house is up for sale and they had the gutters done because the survey they had done highlighted a problem with a leakage onto there property from the guttering blockage.

They keep saying I should pay as the last person who lived i my house agreed to it.

I keep telling them to do one. I am not paying just so they can get a higher fee on there sale.
  • There is no way I would take round a bottle of wine - you don't know how they conduct their religious matters... You might as well take a glazed ham with you. They might not care but they might be deeply religious - just use some common sense and err on the side of caution.

I don't get offended by Xmas cards, I just don't get why people would give me one. Judaism and Christmas don't usually mix.

PS. Chanukah is Dec 16th :)

I do like easter eggs though - don't stop giving me chocolate

Yes I guess it is, but things change. For years I used to do my postman a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea on a Saturday morning, I enjoyed the chat to be honest, now I dont even now who the postman is as he usually comes about 2pm when I'm in work, it would just be so easy to let the same happen with neighbours and live an insular life with no community and I dont want that, I just hope it wont turn out to be a losing battle.

My DH always gives a loaf of bread and a packet of tea to any new neighbours, or friends/relatives who move into a new home.

He says this is what his granny from Kiev always used to do.

I wouldn't give an Xmas card.. you might be able to dig around for a 'Eid al Adha' card (Dec 31st). It does pang of ignorance when people buy me Xmas cards knowing i'm Jewish.
I think we just go into automatic and work our way through our address books ... I don't really send cards any more, but if I had to THINK about whether each and every one would really be appreciated (Is this person a Christian? Is this person ultra-Green?) I certainly wouldn't do it.

The other thing is that it might not occur to everyone that you might not celebrate Christmas. The Jews I've known have usually spread Chanukah (aka the Festival of Fried Food according to our Jewish treasurer!) out over the entire festive season ... :rotfl: (and is that how you spell it? I've usually lost the C ...)

And lovely thought from the OP: hope you all get on very well with your new neighbours.

i agree you sound like really nice neighbours and whatever you get them i'm sure they'll appreciate the effort you're making and not be offended.

at christmas just get a 'seasons greeting' card with nothing religious pictured then its applicable for all religions

If someone sent me a card representing a festival of their religion, I'd be honoured, no matter what religion it was.
