I think I mentioned before that the people who lived in the "Muslim house" before had a bit of a thing about flashing santas and stuff, anyway one year I got into a bit of a competition with them, I couldnt beat them on numbers, but I did buy a huge 15 ft, roof top, rudolf the red nosed reindeer, it has a nose the size of a beach ball and flashes every other second, and on the remote control there is a button to make it sing the song about rudolf, anyway, stuff them, its going up next week

I wouldn't like this either if I lived near you. We're practising Christians, members of the local Methodist Church, and santas, reindeer, rudolf etc have nothing to do with Christmas.

Next week you say? It's still November!!!! How long is this thing going to be flashing away? Thank the Lord it's not near me!

Other thread has been closed, but just a quick update.

A lad knocked on the door yesterday, he had come from the Muslim house ( as its become known in the street), he explained to me that the people who lived there did not speak very much English, and whilst they were not in anyway rude people, they liked to keep themselves very much to themselves and only mix with people from the local mosque, so all my efforts have gone to waste,

I have told him that I will explain to the local round table not to knock on his door with their bucket when they tow around santa next month collecting for disabled children , and I will inform the neighbours about the Xmas card situation, all I can say is this is VERY disapointing and I DO feel rather let down.

Unbelievable so much for the politically correct brigades ideas of inclusion etc
  • this is interesting living outside shrewsbury in a remote area the only things i see are rabbits and sheep , oh and wife and 2 kids ,
so a muslim knocking on the door would be very strange indeed i have how ever seen and heard of them ie the news and papers but never the less continue with this one he could just by shy and dont be rude he could be working at your local general hospital.

It cost me a fortune though, it wasnt a good buy, Chris and Emma who used to live in the "Muslim House" used to go right over the top with their decorations, in fact it was a little distastefull, but they always got in the local rag because they used to raise money for charity from it, anyway, I had nothing on my house so me and MrsM looked like a right pair of old bah humbugs, so I ordered the giant Rudolf of the internet, if I had just put up normal small stuff it would have looked silly next to Chris and Emmas, I do think its a bit faulty though, its supposed to only sing the Red Nose song when you press the remote control, but sometimes it just goes off on its own at all hours, but on the plus side, because it goes up on the roof it does mean the gypsies cant steal it.

  • Hi. I am Muslim and thought I'd take a few moments to help out on this.

There are 2 Eids (and the word eid means celebration)- one at the end of Ramadhan and one to celebrate the pilgrimage. I think this year Eid al Adha will be around New Year.

Practising Muslims tend to spend the celebration days going to the mosque to pray and then at home with family or out with friends.

I have non Muslim families on my street that like to keep themselves to themselves- does that mean I should alienate them? This is just society today Muslim or non Muslim. My non- Muslim in laws say the same thing about their neighbours.

As it happens Muslims are encouraged to share and look out for their neighbours- it is a good Islamic practice. Muhammad (peace be upon him) once said that the rights of neighbours over him (ie muslims) was so great that he thought neighbours would be entitled to some inheritance!

I am disappointed that the underlining tone of some of the replies have been anti Muslim. . .

Another `muslim` thread that quite frankly makes me feel uncomfortable. Margaret clare, with the greatest of respect, islam is a religion and not a race. Ok, so it`s relatively recent compared to christianity, but jesus wasnt from this country. To say that they should have moved to Afghanistan is IMHO quite an ignorant comment. There are many many muslims that live here quite hapily and integrate well.I am a muslim and one of my best friends is a practising christian. He husband is a curate of our local church, i go there to coffee mornings and toddler groups etc. Maybe its the English in me that makes me accomadate what i dont believe in. Each to their own.I do think the original poster of this thread is trying to make an issue on what is a culture problem rather than a religion problem.,What he has described (if true) is culture and not some-one practising islam. What doesnt add up is the fact that some-one on their behalf came over to say they `Dont mix`!!I find this hard to believe,
Why will you be telling the round table not to knock?? Did the relation state that they wouldnt want round table appearing? Please dont assume their private, quiet attitude is rejection of all that happens around them.If they are not charitable, friendly, helpful, then quite frankly they arent practising islam properly, although they are entitled to live their lives quietly and would probably be mortified to know they are being Discussed on this website!!

  • Why will you be telling the round table not to knock??

Because they come around with a Santa on a trailer and play Jonny Mathis in the background, the guy who knocked the door basically came telling me that they were private and mixed with the mosque folk, so I guess they dont want Santa and The round table calling over?, dont get me wrong the guy was very polite, he just made sure I understood thats all.

Part of Islam is charitable giving, that is right. I am not Muslim but have several Muslim friends who have even said that many non-muslims round here behave in a non-muslim way. There is a fear borne of unfamiliarity. I myself used to be baffled by what Islam meant before I had Muslim friends. I think a lot of people are threatened by religious faith full stop, whether it be the Christian lady singing in the town centre, the hindu temples with their bright decor or Muslims, all whom I know bringing up children to bve responsible citizens, an asset to this country not a threat.
