The other thing I was going to ask was when they told you about the original laptop being unrepairable, what was said about the data on it?
Or was this something in the heat of the moment that got forgotten about?
If that's the case would it be worth contacting comet to see if they can send you the HD (if they still have it) so that you can transfer the data yourself or send it to you on some other storage device?2014 Target;

I can guarantee I have so why not wind your neck in!
My PC's and laptops are all back-up through my corporate server.
Bet it is no way as secure as you think!!!! What happens if that data corrupts as it is being transferred? Both copies of that data will be lost!! There is no such thing as a 100% foolproof and reliable system - it just does not exist, all anyone can do is make do with the best they can afford or have already!0 -
What happened to your old desktop hard drive?
You may be able to retrieve stuff from there0 -

Just reading the thread and on the subject of backups I think your post could scare a few people when in reality quite a few modern back procedures are pretty fool proof.
For instance an online backup to a reputable company where your data is verified bit by bit in comparison to the data on your pc and then doing random test restores of files could be classed as pretty much foolproof as I'm struggling to find a way how that could go wrong??
There is a lot of good software out there now with good data verification methods so whether you are backing up online or to an external drive etc as long as you have an offsite copy and are using a decent piece of software you are pretty much covered.
To the OP - regardless of whether the data was backed up or not, thats a separate issue, at worst all you have been is naive to take Comets word on something and it sounds like you have been treated pretty badly, I hope you get it sorted.

It doesn't matter people.
I've given them ten more days to resolve the matter following another useless phone call to Comet where they tried to coerce me into accepting another inferior laptop.
After that I'm filing for court proceedings.
Thanks to all the people that were actually genuinely helpful here.
No thanks to all the people focusing on the subject of my lost data. Read the damn post next time.0 -
Before you make a complete !!!!! of yourself, have you actually bothered to read Comet's compliant proceedures with regard to warranties?
If you have, and put your compliant in writing (whilst keeping copies for future records) to Comet then your next step is to write to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Also READ the policy document before you do complain / sue / throw your dollies out of the pram. If the policy states that it will only replace the laptop up to the value of the original one then we wouldn't want you to look like a complete idiot.
Failing that the comet representative may not have read your initial post in this thread / ignore your rantings and help you or explain why you can't have what you want.
Typical teenager always thinking they know the best way of doing things and won't listen to advice.2014 Target;

You are going to file Court proceedings?...how can you do that when YOU have not purchased anything from Comet?0

I think the OP needs to calm down and wait for the Comet Rep to reply to her. He will be investigating what has happened and then will be able to contact her with a satisfactory solution to her requests, ie a replacement laptop and whether or not they can give her original HD back, who knows. But she should really follow the complaints procedure. The FOS would investigate but only if she is named as the policyholder. And they can take upto 8 weeks to investigate and come back with a reply.0
