Sounds great flashgordon2000 but as we know, varifocals are sometimes harder to fir properly. How did you get over this when buying on line ?
  • The following quote from this site is exactly the reason why you go to the optician in the first place, chances are the arms and nose pads will need adjustment no matter what measurements are given to the supplier, why should high street shops adjust glasses that they didn't sell?

"Top tips for getting good fitting glasses online:
    • Order the glasses, then go to a high street optician for a final fitting and adjustment."

To make money, perhaps? I'm not aware that anyone has said that high street opticians should provide the service for free.

I work for a high street opticians, and if a customer asks us to adjust their glasses we have to make them aware that it is at their own risk.

If the glasses come from us, and I accidentally broke them, I could just head to our frame cupboard and replace them, however if they were from another opticians or an on-line store, I wouldn't be able to replace it because I wouldn't have the ability to order that frame from our suppliers.

I have a scratch on my lenses. After my last eye test I had written down my prescription into my notes in my iPhone.

I took my prescription into a High Street Boots and asked if they could order me a new pair of lenses. The lady told me she could not do this - because I am not a qualified optician I cannot prescribe some lenses with my own notes.

A lens prescription seems seems perfectly simple enough to understand - is there a reason why I cannot ask boots to order me some lenses with a prescription I have written down?

The law? Specs can only be made up to a current & signed prescription - was that not provided at your last eye exam?

Yes - however I wrote down the details electronically and disposed of the paper prescription.

Thanks for anwering my question - I wasn't aware it was law.

Why is there a law preventing me from ordering whatever lenses I choose? Surely I am carrying the risk? (apologies, this is a rheterorical question, I'm not really asking you why certain laws have been passed)

No - you would not be the only one carrying the risk. If you drive with incorrect specs, you would also be a public liability.

Why not just ask for a copy of your prescription?

For anyone needing glasses in or around Walsall there is a fantastic place in Aldridge on the Middlemore Industrial Estate.
