  • I am an optician and a couple of weeks ago had to complete a report on 2 pairs of Oakley glasses / sunglasses for one of our customers to get his money back off Barclaycard as they were both counterfeit. I've had to do this for Tag Heuer and other designer brands in the past.

So if you can't verify that they are legitimate UK based company then I'd say "too good to be true" might just be about right. The last Which report into glasses showed over half of them bought online did not conform to British Standards in terms of accuracy of prescription etc.
  • Do any of these offers apply to non-UK citizens? Glasses in France are very expensive and you have to wait months for an appaointment, so my French friend would like to come to UK for hers.

The MSE email goes out to over 2m people, and '2 pairs of specs £24 delivered' is one of the headline items. It's also on this page
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-glasses-discounts
but none of the articles mentions it. There's a link for Glasses Direct at the bottom which isn't mentioned in the articles, but that just leads to the Eurostar site!
I can't believe nobody else has questioned this, so am I missing something or is MSE run by semi-competent volunteers?

Just had an e-mail from GlasssesDirect.

Another (better?) 40% off discount code.

    "1. 40% off all frames,
    2. Free delivery,
    3. Up to 40% off lens packages,
    4. A FREE second pair with ANY £55+ (pre-discount) frame.

The 4IN1SAVE offer ends midnight Monday 15th October."

If you need thin/tinted etc lenses the 40% off packages looks better than their normal offers. The "Up To" may require some checking before the final OK though.

I have been somewhat unimpressed with the high street opticians (ss - guess the rest) for the last 10 years or so. As I couldn't get a deal which made sense from them I gave up. ss wanted £10 to give me my PD (the last straw) so we did it ourselves. I was nervous about ordering on line. I looked at all the MSE suggested sites and found frames I liked on Lensway. After several days of trawling the sites (including Coastal who Lensway referred me to because they don't have a tint option) I ordered from Lensway, added on Ultra thin lenses, got all the coatings free in addition to the frames and paid £71 total. - A massive discount of £101 and the best pair of specs I have ever had over the last 50 years. I am delighted and just want to say a big thanks to MSE and Lensway. Ordering was easy, communication was good, everything arrived by the promised delivery date and the quality of everything including packaging, case, lens cleaner and the free keyring screwdriver is absolutely brilliant!

Bit hit and miss with Selectspecs. Ordered a pair last year and came within three weeks from Hong Kong. Ordered a pair just before September. Checked last week and still in "Quality Control". E-mailed them and they said they would be dispatched Monday and gave me a voucher for free pair of glasses just pay P&P. Ordered another pair for £4 and has been showing "Payment Processing" for a week !!!! Giving them a few more days and then cancelling the whole lot and ordering from elsewhere as need to replace slightly loose glasses.
  • I just received first order from Glasses Complete and very impressed! The overall cost of a pair of both prescription glasses and sunglasses came well under the cost of my usual opticians. (The cost for the same frames (without lenses) at my usual opticians was £80 more than what I paid overall at Glasses Complete for 2 pairs complete with lenses and coatings.)
The communication and customer service of Glasses Complete is faultless, and I received helpful advice over the telephone when placing the order. I was also able to try frames at home before the order was processed to check I was happy with them.
I won't be going back to my old opticians for glasses again!
Hope this is helpful to others out there, looking to lower the cost of prescription glasses. Thank you, Glasses Complete!

Did you have order numbers for these, I'll look in to it? All budget orders are shipped to our UK office then dispatched now, so should be quicker but I understand one parcel with a lot of orders was held up in customs for a short while.
