  • I ordered specs from them and they never arrived and they refuse a refund . I have to fill in a form and wait another month. Please avoid this firm they are terrible. Takes them ages to answer emails and it not easy to get their email.

  • Apologies if anyone has posted this already, I haven't read all the replies.

Anyway, there's an offer on at Boots Opticians, eye tests are £5 if you print of a voucher from there website. Unfortunately I can't provide a link because I'm not allowed.

I'm going tomorrow for my eye test, and then straight after I'm going online to buy my glasses for a reasonable price. haha!

  • Last time I bought glasses I went to Tesco Opticians because they were giving free sight tests away as a promo. I've been told that this is quite common and happens al the time but they don't advertise this. The only problem was that I wear varifocals and have always had expensive Carl Zeiss lenses which is something that Tesco can not provide. My partners sister works for Tesco Opticians in London and she told us that the lenses they use are not very good but ok if you are on a tight budget. I got my prescription card from them and walked out without buying anything. A few people on these forum had recommended an online company so I used them to buy the lenses so they could put them into my own frame and saved an absolute fortune!

Here is the link, just in case anyone is thinking of doing the same: https://www.onlineglassesdirect.co.uk
I think they were doing some kind of deal when I bought mine as I got an extra 10% off the cost. Think someone posted a voucher code on here somewhere.

If you want to try on your frames before you buy, Boots opticians, which now includes Dollond & Aitchison branches, is offering 2 pairs of prescription glasses, including sunglasses, for £79.

    http://www.boots.com/en/Two-Pairs-of-Glasses-for-%C2%A379_1209458/

    The page says:

"Spend £79 or more on a complete pair of glasses at Boots Opticians and receive a second pair of glasses to the same value or less for free. Offer includes Boots glasses, Boots prescription sunglasses or Kyusu designer glasses. Offer includes frames, standard lenses and scratch resistant finish".

That means if you want an anti-glare coating, it's extra.

Boots is also offering an eye test for £5, until 31 July 2011.

I bought a couple of pairs of glasses from SelectSpecs two years ago. The price was good. The glasses eventually arrived after a long wait. I liked the style, and the lenses were fine. But the frames were so flimsy and cheaply made it was almost incredible, and needless to say they snapped in two within a month.

Having had an impossible time getting getting touch with them up till that point, I didn't bother to complain, and just figured that you get what you pay for.

I'd only buy from an online company again if I was sure of the quality of the frames. If you want personal service, you may be better off in a shop. Boots / D&A is offering 2 for £79 at present, which compares well with some online offers.

Would just like to ask, anyone have transition lenses? I got some from a website and the tint isn't dark enough to shield my eyes in bright light. Is this normal (i.e. transition lenses are useless) or should I avoid the website in future?
  • Order 1st pair from wantglasses just before the 1st bank holiday this year they cam shortly after the second bank holiday, not only were they the wrong frames but the frames I received were not even listed on the website.

I sent an email advising i was not happy & that I had returned them & got a pretty snotty email back sayng I got what i asked for... when clearly I had not.

I asked if they could exchange the glasses for me & they said they would but it would take another two weeks at least.

It has been two weeks & i emailed yesterday askng for an estimation on despatch of my new pair & got this

    "Please allow 7-14days"

Simple generic response - they didnt even bother tocheck my order.

In no way were the emails apologetic or offered any explanation as to why they got it so wrong. Exceptinallly poor service. To boot this was my first (and now only) order from this site.

I would advise anyone to look elsewhere before using wantglasses.co.uk becuase they are pathetic & have no concept of customer service.

The selectspecs glasses for £6 only seem to be single vision 1.49. A proper prescription ups the price
  • I ordered 2 glasses, one for £9.00 and the other for £19.99 (which was rimless), both with anti-glare, anti-scratch and UV protection coatings. The total was £32.49 including P&P. I received individual e-mails when each was shipped and they arrived separately within 3 weeks from Hong Kong which was fine as I had allowed for extra delays because of the multiple bank holidays in April this year. Also, I didn’t have to pay any duty.

Both came in their own cases with a cleaning cloth and, after a little adjustment which I did myself, both fitted nicely.

I have been wearing them alternately for about a month now and haven’t had any problems with them.

I read about others having problems with deliveries after seeing this thread and maybe I was just one of the lucky ones but I have to say that I was happy with the product and the service I received.

    Up to +8 or -8 and 1.49 lens isn't a 'proper prescription'?
