  • I'm rather myopic (-8.25L and -7.5R plus astigmatism) can anyone with a similar or worse prescription than me recommend a good online retailer that does high prescriptions(thus thinner lenses)? Glassesdirect don't go up to my prescription, for example.

    Thank you.

Most online places don't for good reason. The fitting of your frames and lenses are critical for you to see clearly with that sort of prescription. Even the distance from your eye to the lens needs to be taken into account.

  • I can vouch for http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk/ , ordered 2 pairs from there and both are fine!

Thanks! Curse my myopia. I suppose I will just look out for good deal in opticians or hope I win the lottery to get laser eye surgery :D

Laser surgery isn't such a good option with that prescription either - I'm afraid. Results are less predictable.

i also took out the lensway deal from groupon.
i already had a sneeky suspicion that the prices would instantly go up and have checked today and the pricing is way higher than it was when i bought the voucher.
to make matters worse the frames i wanted are no longer there.

do i complain to lensway of groupon?

    Hi,

Just on a side-note, if you're like me with quite a high prescription, standard lenses just won't do.

ASDA are doing a deal right now where you pay £65 for a pair of designer glasses including the lenses.

The lenses have the following options FREE:
    - Thin and light lenses (1.6)
    - Anti-Scratch Coating
    - Anti-Reflection Coating

When I asked about thinner lenses because my prescription is high, he took my current glasses for a quick check and said "We'd use 1.74 lenses for your prescription as standard, so there would be no additional charge"

Plus, they are doing £20 off your second pair, so that makes it £110 for 2 pairs of glasses with 1.74 lenses!

As a contrast, I'm waiting for a refund from GroupOn for the Glasses Direct code as, by the time I've added the extra lense options to the £89 glasses I liked, it adds an additional £85 PER PAIR, making my total order value:
    £89 + (£85 x 2) + £3.95 - £52.95 (voucher value) + £22 (voucher cost) making a total of: £232 for 2 pairs of designer glasses!

It's a real shame that those of us with worse eyes, and therefore more likely to buy more pairs of glasses, get treated worse.

Its not a deal. They used to be £50 for one and £90 for 2 pairs. The price went up in Jan this year.

You need to ask for 'aspheric' lenses as the standard 'spheric' ones will give you more distortion (chromatic aberration) outside of your 'pupil' distance. This is because a 1.67/1.74 lens is packed tighter than 1.50 which is what makes it thinner. Ask for their advice on spheric and aspheric before you commit. They shouldn't charge you extra.
  • I just got some new designer glasses from this shop http://www.spexdiscount.co.uk/
The lens quality is quite good. I Like them because they have a phone number, they offer returns, their prices are quite competitive and they are based here in the UK.
I would recommend you shop around but I do recommend that shop just because I had a good experince with them :-)
