Disgusted at ebay/paypal/buyer...

Hi guys,

Happy New Year etc etc!

What can I do about this:

1) Buyer bought an ipod for £99, and paid £2 for NORMAL first class delivery.
2) I paid the extra to get it sent FIRST CLASS recorded.
3) I have a receipt/proof of postage and tracking number.
4) Item has not arrived (posted 16th Dec)
5) Buyer has filed a complaint.
6) Payapl have removed £101 from my account.
7) I have a negative balance on my paypal account.

My question is this: where do I stand re. compensation??? Clearly, this item is lost. I choose to send it recorded, even though the buyer did not want it.

I am worried that I am going to lose out here.

The tracking number states that the item is 'still in the delivery network'.

Even though I shelled out the extra, paid for recorded etc, it seems I am going to get shafted :(

I have phoned ebay, used the resol;ution centre etc, but nothing has happened so far. My paypal balance is in the negative, I have not got the item, and it seems that I am going to lose the difference between what the buyer paid, and what I received for the item (only to have the money taken away again).

HOW CAN A SELLER WHO CHOOSES TO SEND RECORDED BE PENALISED FOR A MISSING ITEM????? :(:(

You should have sent an item of this value by special delivery, recorded is no better than standard mail and only gives £41 compensation if lost.
  • I know this. But that is not the point. If a buyer requests for first class, and I choose to send recorded, what else can I do? Also, noone at the post office mentioned the value of £41 to me...

The best thing to do in future is pay the extra for special if the item sells for over £41. It might be worth ringing Royal Mail to check if they have any further details on the tracking, they are very poor at updating the track and trace website. Its also possible that the item is at the buyers delivery office and no card left, again worth a phone call to the relevant depot.
  • It is the responsibility of the seller to get the item to the buyer, unfortunately it is your loss if it gets lost in the post. It is also well known that recorded does not always track. I am surprised you were not asked the value of the item when you posted it though - our local post office always asks.

Have you asked the buyer if they have checked with their local sorting office to see if it is there? Maybe you could find out where the sorting office is and ask them.

Unfortunately this one may be a harsh lesson.

Was typing this at the same time as the above post - just had to answer the door in the meantime!

  • It is just infuriating, that I post something in very good faith, shell out extra, but am going to end up out of pocket.

I am telling you, ebay is becoming a fraudsters/buyers paradise. Sellers have literally no protection against cases like this...

But there is no evidence of fraud here!

You should not offer p&p options that do not properly cover you if you are not willing to take the risk yourself.

    Sorry!

For an item worth £99 it should have been sent by special delivery.

Recorded delivery is just first class with a signature at the other end ~ special delivery is tracked with the signature at the other end, that's the difference.

I sold something last night for £50 and will be sending it via Special Delivery so that I'm covered. I'm just over the £41, but I'm not taking any chances.

  • Contact royal mail, they may have proof of delivery if they do report fraud to the police and get a crime ref number.

    File through small claims court.
  • There could well be evidence of fraud. If this item is never actually being properly tracked, then the buyer could well just be saying they have not received it....?
