I don't mind stocking up on stuff, in fact I will rase my hand and say that I'm one of those people who worries about running out of something (even when I wont) that I often buy things I sometimes don't need when I see it on special offer, but really, having so much stuff that you have pepsi and coco pops in the bedroom or washing up liquid under the bed in the spare room, I just don't get that.

Its one thing to bulk buy when something is cheap and to have enough to keep you and your family going, but when is enough enough, when your finally sleeping on it all?

I'm not trying to take the p*** out of you guys as every little helps especially now, but how do you know when you have gone to far and it has become more of an obsession?

I live in a two bed flat (reasonable size) I don't need to put stuff in my bedroom the second bedroom, living-room or main hall cupboard and I can easily stock up on enough essentials to last me a couple months.

Am I missing something here, do I need to be stocking up on things for 6months +

I do admire you guys/gals for doing this but is buying all this stuff really worth giving up some of the space in your homes for?

  • I succumbed to another fish offer at the weekend! This time Sainsbury's Taste the Difference cod fillets at half price - £1.99 instead of £3.99. It's lovely fish and somehow 4 boxes ended up in my trolly! It was like doing a jigsaw slotting individually bagged fish in the already stuffed freezers!

Only stocked up on my washing powder capsules as they were £2.80 instead of £6 ish. I usually just buy as I go along but it was a good offer.

Will be looking out for the easter egg offers though as need to buy a large amount this year.

I think it kind of depends if theres something you use a lot of and how big your family is? we are 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 cats, so you can imagine how much stuff we get through! am on tight budget now so am trying to plan ahead, but for me stuff thats usually expensive is the stuff I notice most in offers, like washing up liquid, washing liquid, body wash, shampoo, conditioner etc? I drink a lot of tea as well, and try to cook as much as I can from scratch, so mainly stuff that keeps, can be frozen etc that keeps my budget down is good for me. Lucky I can store some in the garage and rest goes in understairs cupboard, but generally planning and watching offers does save me money on stuff we use regularly.

I think the one thing to watch is buying stuff only because its on offer, but that you dont use? but tbh I think most people here are very savvy and only stock up on things that they will use x

I think for me, I stock up with the following rules in mind:

    1) is this a product much cheaper at the moment (promotion)?

    2) Is this product I would usually use at normal price?

    3) do I have space in the home for storage?

    4) does it have a long shelf span?

if I can answer yes to all these, i will get as much as I can.

I think it is good to buy when prices are low, as you will eventually use them.

    I love promotions

I've only just got to the end of my stash of Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner...anyone else remember the offer where Boots gave you 100 points (worth £1) when you bought a 37p or 69p bottle of HE? It was when they changed the design of the bottles. Cheap shampoo and £100 of points to spend in the Boots 75% off sale. You couldn't really go wrong, especially if your family use shampoo at the rate mine does.

I do bulk buy, yes. It does depend on what it is though. Shampoo, washing powder/liquid, soap, body lotion, dishwashing tablets etc I'm quite happy to carry a year or two's worth of, if it's cheap enough. (Dishwashing tablets at £1 for 60 etc, lol.) Tinned and packet stuff I'll go up to 6mo worth, other things usually a month or so. I aim not to keep anything in my freezers for longer than 6 mo. It has to all be stuff I'll use though...for example we all use soap, not handwash, so I never even look at handwash prices. And one thing I do know...there will always be another offer on eventually.

I do deeply resent running out of a particular stockpile bargain and having to pay full price for something though, or even just a normalish sort of offer. It happened when I finished my year's supply of Tesco Persil...I actually had to buy offer of the week stuff, which was painfull. Never again! I've got a couple of year's worth of liquid wash in stock now.

Something wrong with the maths there!

Personally, I am wondering what to do with the 60 tins of Branston beans I bought when they were 4 for a quid.

    I got a bit carried away :o.

I thought I was bad having 20 tins. But I didn't buy them all at once, I just keep topping up. Worried sick that the cupboard's going to come off the wall & crush me to death whilst washing up
