Charges cant just appear, there must have been other periods when you have been overdrawn to get the charges (or you have written cheques or made payments that you havent had the money for).

Not with Santander. The first time you go even £1 over your limit they charge you. How much you are charged depends on how much you went over by on a sliding scale. I went over by about £15 (for 2 days over NY when no one was in the bank to help me) and they charged me £60 - 1 x £35 charge & 1 x £25 charge. I got my £35 charge waivered by them but still have to pay the £25 and as the patronising call centre man who could barely speak english told me I am very lucky to get one charge waivered, it won't happen again, it's a goodwill gesture, blah blah blah.

My advice with Santander (I have an ongoing non charges related dispute with them) is not to bother trying to tell the problem to the people on the customer services helpline just request the number for Complaints. They are based in the UK and are literally 100 x more helpful then the normal line. The suggestion of going in and getting mad is good but in my experience Santander dont really care if you do. They really are the devil bank and it is having to deal with them that's motivated me to pay off my O/D debt if it kills me. Terrible terrible organisation.

Good luck with feeding your kids OP I know everyone keeps saying speak to churches but I too would emphasis that. My church give out food parcels to the needy in my community along with a few other churches in like a partnership scheme!
  • Just read about going with lloyds for their save the change scheme... Just be careful with that though, sometimes the change being taken can tip you over into the overdraft!
  • Where we are in Staffordshire the YMCA also provides food parcels to anyone who asks. You could ring them if you have a local branch.
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

Sweetheart, can you call or get to a Citizens' Advice Bureau? They may be able to get you some emergency help.

Yay! so glad for you sweetie, once you are back on your feet you can take steps to avoid this situation again.

Have just been telling my OH about your situation, he said some very, very bad words about the bankers, our swear box has just had a banker sized bonus:)

Me too - glad people have been able to help you out... and also that you have made a plan to avoid it happening again - I guess its when something like this happens (and it could happen to anyone) that you plan ahead like never before!!!

Good luck and all the best xxx

you may need to make alternative plans for your OH on the fuel front - most petrol stations round this way state that you must buy a minimum of £5 worth of fuel in a transaction
