Blue smoke on start up - Ford Mondeo

I looked at a Mondeo last year with this same problem, they guy selling it explained that was why he was selling it and he was told it was the oil rings that failed?
Took it to a local garage for a once over before considering buying it, did a few quick tests and found the valves were worn, unknown why as the guy said he looked after it but I think not, didn't buy it but a few weeks later, saw it while passing a scrap yard, already was being broken with the bonnet off and mirrors - sounds not good!0 -
Remember this car is only a few thousand miles old (new
)
Rick, checking the glowplugs is a 5 min job with a multimeter, no need to remove anything with the possible exception of a simple cover and the lead to the plug. Test resistance accross the terminal to earth, duff ones are usually open circuit.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
my 1.8tdci tranny connect has done this since it had done about 10k (57 plate 70k now).
basically it is due to the way breathers are putting oil mist in to inlet pipework/intercooler and then over night it turns from a mist to a liquid build up and then burns off when started back up again. One of the boost pipes split on mine and you would be surprised just how much oil has been sprayed around the engine bay from it.
nothing can be done to stop it apart from using an oil catch can, look at most diesels fire up from cold and there will be smoke from exhaust for a while0 -

What engine is in your Connect, is it the older Focus Tdci, or for that matter is the engine in the OP's car the same as yours?
A mate had an early one and it had the same engine as a Focus Tddi.
Looking at the youtube clip it doesn't look blue, but that may simply be due to it being a video clip not the actual car.
My Tdci puts out a puff of smoke when started from cold, but it has done nigh on 150k.
Perhaps it is an injector seal problem, but if I was in the OP's position I would be tempted to throw some Redex or STP in it, to rule out dirty injectors, unlikely but worth a try at less than £10.
The fact that it only does it overnight when the engine has gone from Hot to Cold would tend to point towards the theory that something is leaking though.
Why not park it at the dealership, get a cab home, then go down to the dealer in the morning and start it in front of the mechanic.
He can therefore not deny it is doing it.
It may not be convenient but will ensure the mechanic can no onger deny the fault.0 -
At that age and mileage "he" shouldn't be doing anything, the dealer/leaser etc should.
Best not call folks "knobs" eh, ??;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Smoke is 100% blue, starts out really thick then thins out, then disappears completely - phone doesn't pick the thin stuff up tho.
Phoned Ford direct today, they were happy with what I said and they agreed it does sound like something is leaking causing the smoke.
Booked into a third garage wednesday, another overnight job. So I will see what he says about the videos I have, if he doesn't agree the videos show there is a problem, then will go back up myself and start it while he's there.
Ford are going to liase with the garage on my behalf, asking what checks they're doing etc to try and rectify the problem.
So will have to see what happens!
Thanks for all your replies again! This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.0 -

Good luck OP and hope that you get it all sorted, Fors direct are normally pretty good0

I had the same problem on my 60 reg hyundai i30 diesel, glow plugs replaced & this seemed to sort the problem, but not instantly, im sure car had a wiring problem as well.
BTW a modern common rail direct injection diesel, should not smoke at startup, does your car have a diesel particulate filter.0
