    Good morning :)

I'm at the job centre today...again! I have applied for one job since I was there last week  Normally I apply for 10+ in that time so I am a bit worried and desperately trying to find something this morning to apply for to make myself look a bit better. It's just been a really rubbish week for jobs!
Job centre job specs are just terrible aren't they! You would think in all these years they would get that right.
I would suggest just preparing for your ideal job, and it is kind of good as you will have a lot of questions to ask about the company in the interview, which when you are well researched is sometimes difficult.

What about searching for a job specification about the role in general? Or look at companies that do similar work read up on their services and projects and then you can think on how your skills could help you in that role?

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to have a look on prospects or a similar site and just get a description of the job title. The company info thing is more difficult, they are a development trust. I have literally found one sentence about them online. I am at the job centre today so going to ask if they have any more information but if I see the same person for signing today I doubt they will be any help!
A few days ago I applied for a job via S1.Jobs.com which happened to be linked to an agency I was registered with. The agent who has been dealing with me called to enquire as to why I would apply for a role when I currently have a temp contract. I told her it was because I'd prefer a permenant job and I'm still looking for that while I'm temping.

It was such an akward conversation... at the end of the telephone call she said I should go back to them when I'm at the end of the contract.

Am I doing something wrong in seeking a permenant position whilst on a temp contract??? it could come to an end at any point!

Just reading that has really annoyed me! I blummin' hate agencies! They don't care about their clients at all, it's just whatever suits them best!

Hmm some advice needed. I asked this a while ago on the debt free wannabe board, but this is a different crowd.

To get a job I want, I am far more likely to succeed with a driving license... I'm debating to whether to re-start taking lessons. I have about 3k of debt and keeping up payments and have paid some of it off. I have £55 in a savings account to put towards lessons. Now the dilemma, when do I start lessons? I have an overdraft of £750, which preferably I don't want to touch except in emergencies. My JSA/HB are just covering my out goings. I'm due a tax refund in April and if I don't do any work until then I'll get about £400 back. Shall I wait for this or start soon? I've already done 8 lessons a few years ago, it'll take me 2 lessons or so to get back up to the stage I was at I reckon.

I just want to get my career on track, I'm heading off in the wrong direction with the job I've done and being able to drive is a key thing. I did enjoy my driving lessons, it's just a case of money vs career.

On the DFW board, obviously they said pay off the debt first. But what does everyone here reckon?

As someone who has a full clean licence and my own car I'm not so sure I would start the lessons til your debt is paid off. It hasn't made any difference to me whatsoever, but obviously it does depend on the type of jobs you are going for. Learning to drive is just such an expensive thing, and it would be a bit of waste for you to start and then not be able to afford to finish. Personally I would wait, maybe get enough money saved up to pay for an intensive driving thing.
  • Morning all!

Woke up this morning thinking about if there are ways to address a couple of issues I have.
My last full time job was for three and a half years, where I was dismissed for gross misconduct. This was all lies, but I digress, the fact is there. This company also now has an awful reputation, and they have not stopped slandering me, it really is a dirty stain on my CV, however well I did at the job (which was very well, in fact my key achievments on my CV come from this period).
I really have not thought of a way to really address this problem, except...
A friend has given me a consultancy job at his company, because of my good reputation (when you ignore the slander as he does) and because he understands the issue above, that I need to get at least a job away from the 'stain'.
This was all finalised in December where I was waiting for my contract (sales commision only), he then went on holiday until end of January, and he has been very busy, I am now finding it really hard to get this moving again.
How much do I harrass him to get this going again? I am emailing once a week at present trying to get a catch up meeting.
I am nervous as I have this job on my CV, but have not done any work on it yet, and it is getting harder to bluff it still being in the brainstorming phase; to all intensive purposes it is currently a 'fake' job on the CV.
Having this job on my CV made a massive difference and I started getting interest as soon as I added it (due to supposedly being currently employed).

Carry on or step up hassling the company?

Has anyone else got a 'stain' on their CV? What did you do?

I am now 10 months out of work which is unprecedented, and the big difference this time is the stain.
  • Good Luck for your interview Fruitloop :j

I have mine today at 2.30. Won't know until next Thursday though if I have it or not

Have you tried phoning them? If you are emailing once a week and getting no reply I'd find another way of trying to contact them. I'm not sure you should have them on your CV really as if you started looking at other jobs you'd be stuck when it comes to references. I had an issue with a company I worked for when I was 17. I had a work accident due to lack of training and ended up with a permanent back problem so I sued them. I was fine getting another job when I came to leave that I did get a little stuck with references. In the end I used the one from my previous job and a character reference, ignoring the company who had caused the injury. I don't recall being asked why I didn't use them for a reference but if I had have been I'd have probably just said the manager had left or something like that.

Hiya, I can understand why the advise was to pay off debt first, but as you say, a different view here.

Certainly, being able to drive makes life easier. Of the 4 jobs I've had an interview for :rotfl: :o  I wouldn't have been able to apply if it meant going by bus, and I can only think of two at the moment that I could have applied for out of about 30 so far.

Looking at your time scale, I assume you will have to buy another provisional licence which when I learnt about 7 years ago was £39.00 iirc

Driving lessons arnt cheap but I say if you can manage them without getting into trouble in other areas, money wise, that is. The go for it I say :) Is there anyone who can offer you private practice to supliment your lessons?

    Good Luck
  • I am learning too drive at the moment and it is very expensive. The provisional cost £50 and I have just sat my theory test which cost me £31 and that is all before you start the actual lessons. I am learning with the AA and have to say that they are very good they charge £23 a lesson but you get a slight discount if you buy a block of lessons together.

    Hope this helps.

    Morning everyone,

I wonder if anyone could help please? :)

A job has appeared in our local paper, that I'd heard was coming up, through my OH at work.

I've been told to "look out for it" as "it might suit" due to what I'd done before.

The job asks for ICT Skills, now here is the question, what does ICT Skills mean :o I doubt I've got these skills if I don't know what it means :D but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I have googled but wasn't sure what I was looking at.

    Thanks :)

What's the job doing? I should imagine it's whether you can use packages like Word and Excel, and if you are a quick typist.
