  • Re: the voluntary work interrogation. I think they were trying to get a response along the line of 'I'm excellent at time management and here it why . . .'

Just back from my interview, it went quite well I think :)

They are going to be doing second interviews and will let me know by early next week so fingers crossed. Could really do with a permanent job.
Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.
  • Went to my first interview tonight, and I'm quite pleased it went well.
Its the perfect job for me, with loads of training and it seemed like a prefect interview... until he said.. you sound good for the role. You will need a second interview with blah blah blah

I have been so nervous for the last few days planning my interview prep and now I have to do it all over again! Thats just mean!

Where has my confidence disappeared to lol!
Good luck to all those who have recently had/are having interviews!

    its so scary its fun

  • A few days ago I applied for a job via S1.Jobs.com which happened to be linked to an agency I was registered with. The agent who has been dealing with me called to enquire as to why I would apply for a role when I currently have a temp contract. I told her it was because I'd prefer a permenant job and I'm still looking for that while I'm temping.

It was such an akward conversation... at the end of the telephone call she said I should go back to them when I'm at the end of the contract.

Am I doing something wrong in seeking a permenant position whilst on a temp contract??? it could come to an end at any point!

Hmm, so whilst employed in a permanent position it's OK to apply for a permanent position, but not whilst in a temporary contract?

Some cynics may suggest that it's not in the agency's best interests to place a candidate who is temping in a permanent role, because at least if you are temping on a regular basis it's a regular income for the agency, whereas a permanent position is a fixed sum. Not that I'd ever be cynical about agencies of course...:p

It seems unfortunate for you that this was the same or an associated agency. Best of luck with your future job searches!

its not that unusual now, it's an employers market and a lot of them seem to think that they can get you to jump through as many hoops as they want now.

My best mate when for an interview for a job in a bookmakers a couple of weeks ago and she was interviewed by 5 people and some of the questions she was asked were so personal she refused to answer, they basically said to her we can ask what we want because you need us more than we need you.

Needless to say she didn't get the job nor did she want it after that!

You're right, it is an employer's market but recruiters also have to realise that for this reason also, job seekers will be applying for multiple roles and may miss out on their preferred candidate because they have an unnecessarily long recruitment process and other employers may act to offer jobs faster. I interviewed for, and was offered a job between the first and second interviews for a position! Now apparently job A, with the two interviews, is looking to put forward an offer and I would have definitely taken the offer if the process had been quicker and I hadn't interviewed for the job that I accepted. It is a two-way process.

I know that in the current climate I am in an extremely lucky position to be offered two jobs that I would love to do, but I do think that I have an almost recession proof job.
  • Somebody please beat some sense into me.

A few months ago I applied for the Sky Graduate Scheme in the 'Betting and Trading' division.

Now that they have finally got back to me with the offer of an interview I am hesitant due to having to leave home and relocate. I didn't enjoy my time at Uni and one of the reasons was the loneliness of living away from home. I do however realise that this is probably as good an opportunity as I am going to get.

I would go to the interview- if nothing else it is excellent experience. At this stage you don't have to commit to making a decision to relocate, it's simply finding out if you and the company are a good fit. It does sound like this is a good opportunity so I think that you would regret it if you didn't go. It will also give you an opportunity to find out if it is a friendly work environment and if you would have the opportunity to socialise and meet new people.

If you are offered the job then you can weigh up whether it is worth relocating for. Do you have any other jobs in the pipeline at the moment?

Its the waiting game that annoys me, applied for 3 positions(2 at same firm) and not heard nothing yet, im positive of hearing something but longer it goes on will bore me to death as my job is mind numbingly boring, i would apply for more jobs but ones that dont require qualifications are scarce

Hmm some advice needed. I asked this a while ago on the debt free wannabe board, but this is a different crowd.

To get a job I want, I am far more likely to succeed with a driving license... I'm debating to whether to re-start taking lessons. I have about 3k of debt and keeping up payments and have paid some of it off. I have £55 in a savings account to put towards lessons. Now the dilemma, when do I start lessons? I have an overdraft of £750, which preferably I don't want to touch except in emergencies. My JSA/HB are just covering my out goings. I'm due a tax refund in April and if I don't do any work until then I'll get about £400 back. Shall I wait for this or start soon? I've already done 8 lessons a few years ago, it'll take me 2 lessons or so to get back up to the stage I was at I reckon.

I just want to get my career on track, I'm heading off in the wrong direction with the job I've done and being able to drive is a key thing. I did enjoy my driving lessons, it's just a case of money vs career.

On the DFW board, obviously they said pay off the debt first. But what does everyone here reckon?
