  • Ooh I've just read that you're doing a Reed internship. I had an interview for one of those a few months ago but turned it down (I regret doing so now). What sort of things do they have you doing, if you don't mind me asking? :)

Basically doing all the admin stuff to allow the consultants to get on with their jobs.

Answering the phone - Acting as a filter and getting rid of all the people who want to apply for the Royal Mail Xmas jobs and phone the office even though it is a different department with a different phone number and process.

Scanning documents onto the system - Eligibility to work etc

Sending out and chasing references - by phone and e-mail

Dealing with timesheet issues - making sure that they have been processed and authorised

Little bit of Candidate sourcing by looking at CV's and matching them to the jobs.
  • Just wondering... I keep reading many posts about getting agency work, as if it's really simple. Is it really as simple as walking in and being given work? As someone with zilch on my CV (no recent work experience or references) is it worth registering with them?

I would happily do anything like basic office work, factory, kitchen hand, etc. TBH I would prefer just to do a few days work rather than commit long term as I'm basically trying to see if I can handle it in the workplace right now.

    Thanks for letting me know.
It sounds quite interesting, when I attended my interview it sounded a lot more boring. I kind of wish I'd taken it now, as it would have filled a gap on my CV and given me references, but I guess you live and learn!

Certainly register with the agencies - can do no harm. When do so though try to have some idea of a sector of work as the broader you are the harder it will be. I don't mean to put you off but agencies put even more of a premium on experience as that is what is demanded by the companies using them.

  • Been invited to a scary sounding interview at a Football stadium for admin, you have to be there at 9am for coffee and 'pleasantries' and then a 4 hour long interview selling yourself and your personality :S these are interviews I don't like doing :(

    Hi everybody.

So here I am... unemployed again. Hopefully not for long though this time.

I've just posted my CV on here, trying to update it and hoping to get a bit of feedback to help me.

I've a few applications to be getting on with and meeting with somebody to discuss volunteering on Wednesday but I am already bored out my mind. It was very strange this morning not having to wake up at the crack of dawn!

Good luck to those with interviews this week.
  • Much better interview this time, but you know that nugget feeling you get when you walk out after the interview knowing you had a much better answer which you should have used in a question - ye i have that! "Give an example of a time you went above & beyond for a customer" and i answered the times i phoned people who were maybe working about Wii's who were desperate, now in itself that's still a decent answer but the problem is i know there's a much better suggestion that i should have made. We used to get customers coming in all the time saying "oh i need X song for a funeral/wedding/christening" etc, now at that point we'd instantly kick into a mode of "right, this is the most important thing we can do in the world right now" and do whatever it took to if we couldn't sell the customer a CD with that track on it we atleast sent them home knowing they could download it from our website no matter how long it took.

Hopefully the rest of the interview & my experience will give me the boost which the relatively poor answer needs to put it over.

  • Hi

I'm joining in if thats ok! Been told recently that our business is relocating over 50 miles away - I don't have access to a car and also ave young children so can't really add a 3 hor commute on to my day anyway! So thats me redundant in 6 months - have dusted off the old CV and revamp and its now on TotalJobs, Reed and the local newspaper website.

Am looking for admin assistant work or even accounts work where I can go back and complete my AAT. Am in North Manchester so if anyone knows anything or got any good tips, I'm all ears!!

It's great you already have your CV out there! Don't know where you are specifically, I'm between Bury and Bolton and after redundancy I got a few temp admin jobs via an agency in Bolton called Linda Taylors. They also do permanent work and seem to have a good reputation, some councils and NHS departments uses them.
Also get the Manchester Evening News on a Thursday, the jobs pages can be quite good, DON'T get the JobsNorthWest (I think? Green cover) on a Friday, it's £2 and the pages are exactly the same as those in the MEN!
Finally, search the job centre website by postcode AND by town as they often throw up different results despite being the same place!!
