At 3:30pm last Friday the assessment day I attended was just ending. At 3:30pm today I get a phone call - I got the job! This is a permanent full time role, it's in mental health and there is clear opportunities for progression and learning so I don't feel I could have got any better job right now! It's exactly what I want to do as a career. My current job temping as a medical receptionist ends next Friday (was covering maternity leave) and this one might take a few weeks to start as they need my CRB check back and references but I can cope with a month or so without pay.

Sending good luck happy vibes out to everyone with interviews coming up xx

well done! that's great news :T
  • Congrats littlestar! I am desperately trying to get a job as a mental health support worker so I know how tough it can be :)

I have got a job interview in a few weeks time :D Its just for pub work, but I've been out of work for 3 years due to ill health so I am so freaking excited that someone has even bothered to give me an interview (I've applied to loads of places, but never hear back from anyone). Its 16 hours a week and its morning shifts so that suits me as a nice way of easing myself back into work and I am hoping that a lot of people would be put off applying as it probably doesn't fit into most peoples studying/working schedules.

I've never worked in a pub before so I was just wondering if anyone has any advice for the interview? I'm guessing they are going to want someone who is very chatty and outgoing to talk to the regulars (shifts are 9am-1pm so I am going to guess that its only going to be hardcore regulars who go in at that time!)? I don't know if this sounds stupid, but I never wear make-up, but would it be a good idea to wear it for the interview? Its supposed to make you look more professional, right? and being a pub they might be more concerned with image than say a call centre would be.

One final thing, when I was doing some research for the application form I noticed they had the A4E logo on one of their pages so I mentioned something about how I think they would be a fantastic company to work for to help me get back into work. I know companies like it when you pick up on little things about their company so is it worth mentioning this again in the interview or does it just make it sound like I am using them to get my foot back on the employment ladder? (I hope that makes sense- I'm guessing they are going to ask why I want to work for the company and as its just a pub its sort of hard to think of reasons).

Hope everyone has a good weekend :)
Knock me down I'll get right back up again, I'll come back stronger than a powered up Pac-Man
  • Congratulations littlestar!

coin operated girl, yes, I'd wear a little slap for that interview. Even though it's not in the evening I think they will expect day time make up. At that time I expect you'd mostly be serving coffees and stuff at least until near the end of your shift, that a few night workers perhaps dropping in for a drink on their way home? Depends what sort of a place it is really, I used to work similar hours in a wine bar and it was mostly coffee and snacks until say 11-12 when the drinkers started appearing. Good luck with all your interviews, I've been following your threads elsewhere and you seem to be getting along just fine now.:)

Good luck to everyone who is still looking for a job and have a great weekend everyone.
    Whatever

hi coin operated girl....yes i would wear a little make up, just day make up though. have you got any cash handling experience? if so i would mention that. does the pub serve food? if so their menu might be online, worth a look to understand their product. it would probably be more tea and coffee at that time of day. good luck! i used to work in pubs and i enjoyed it :)
  • Hope everyone having a good weekend.

Really enjoyed the first week of the Internship - While I am still as broke as I was am getting out of the house and finally seeing what the world of work is like. As it is a recruitment company it is also giving me an insight into how the business works and hopefully they will give me interviews at the end of the 12 weeks.

Ooh I've just read that you're doing a Reed internship. I had an interview for one of those a few months ago but turned it down (I regret doing so now). What sort of things do they have you doing, if you don't mind me asking? :)

Congrats littlestars, too, you must be over the moon.

there might be someone who you could get a lift with or how about a bicycle.

It's a 12 mile journey each way so not confident I'd be able to cycle it, plus I would finish at 10pm.

But actually I've found that there is a bus from the place I'd be working, to the nearest city. The last bus is at 10.13pm and the bus stop is 300m from the place I'd be working, so provided they let me out bang on time I'd make it to the bus (with a sprint) I think?! I will look into it more if they actually give me the job :o

First time i think i've ever been glad i've recieved a rejection phone call - the interview today was a complete disaster from their end, firstly she lost my CV which seemed to throw her off, when she asked what age i was and followed up with "oh so that would put you on the higher wage band" it was pretty obvious that i wouldn't have got the job in a million years, she was pretty negative sounding about the company too. Overall one of the worst interviews i've ever experienced and probably one of the shortest, a whole 3 minutes - christ i can't even make a cup of coffee in the time it took her to "interview" me (although strangely, in that time she managed to ask twice if i smoked - the nail in the coffin for my chances was when i pointed out that my 2 clinic appointments were for post-treatment oncology checkups). I'm not disheartened by this though, the whole shebang seemed very ramshackle and at best it would have been a stop-gap not a place i would have liked to have on my record after meeting the manager who clearly didn't know what she was doing.

  • ^That sound horrendous. I think you've had a lucky escape, tbh.

Yeah that makes two of us - i'm never going to win awards for professionalism, but that was shocking to me, clearly my standards of organisation weren't as bad as my last boss made out!
