  • As if, just got an email from a job I applied for about 45 minutes ago wanting to give me a last minute interview tomorrow morning! And yes I would like to know what this phantom quality was, I think it could have been that the other candidate had good product knowldge (it was an electrical and hardware store, all I had to go on are my 'fabulous customer service' skills :P ). Good luck with yours too :)

  • Just thought I'd say hi, I found out today my temp contract position will be ending 8th October, so it's back to the grind of looking for work. I've got an appointment with 2 agencies tomorrow and have applied for around 9 jobs today, so fingers crossed something comes along soon.

  • Ok so today I have recieved details about the scariest job interview I think I may ever have to go to in my life.

The interview its self will last 45 mins this is to be preceeded by a short presentation (10 min max) regarding my undergraduate project. Prior to the interview I will be doing 2 seperate 20 min tests to assess my verbal and numberical reasoning skills.

This is one of the few jobs I have applied for within the 'private sector' are all interviews like this? (Ideally want to get into NHS & Prior to going to uni used to work for my local council)

Also it states the the interview is competency based my understanding of this from what I have read means that it will be more based upon evidence you can give of examples within the workplace/uni/own experience etc. as the job is lab based I expect a few scientific questions will be thrown into the mix - best get swotting up wish me luck!

Good luck. My jobs have always been in the private sector and they have varied, from the single interview, 2 or 3 interviews, with or without tests. I have always been subjected to competancy based questions, the more you do the better you become but if you can, get someone who can coach and support you on this. I used to ask competancy questions to my friends to get an idea of how many ways questions can be answered and interpreted, this often triggered ideas on answering the question myself

As for the presentation, excluding preparation, it is only 10 minutes then the scary bit will be over. ;) don't forget to speak slowly, especially if your audience is older than you, not only will they understand better, you will have less words to say:)

I had an interview similar to this last week for the public sector - 45 mins for role play (5min intro, 10min prep, 20min acting & 10min review), followed by 45 min competency based interview (including a 5 min presentation) & then 45 min written/practical test. All the other jobs I have so far interviewed for (only 4) have been private sector and just been a sit down interview with a mix of skills and competency based questions so it really just depends on company policy.

I think my assessment day went awfully so not really the best person to give you advice but all I will say is if it says 10mins max for the presentation make it very planned and ensure it doesn't run over - I know that probably sounds obvious but I have been at events/conferences where we have been allocated timed slots and seen some v competent and intelligent people run massively over as they've started to add extra unplanned details once they get on the topic and it can be easily done but doesn't tend to impress

Interviews seems to be getting harder and harder.. the other week I had a 90 minute interview and 4 role plays for a job in a charity.

Had a good day yesterday, went to an assessment centre for a job working as a support worker in mental health, had to do groupwork, a questionnaire and an interview. It's the first time I've come away from an interview feeling I couldn't have done better, so fingers crossed!!

It amazed me though how some people were acting there... people were late because they didn't read the invite properly and went to the wrong place, some people didn't speak good English, some people didn't bring the correct documentation and, worst of all, 2 girls complained because the interviews were running up to 5pm (as per the invite) but they wanted to leave by 2pm!

  • Had the first day of my Internship yesterday..really a case of getting the formalities out of the way on a Friday so I can get going for real on Monday.

It has been a while since I have been looking forward to a Monday and getting into a healthy work routine...even got a buzz out of buying my first Season Ticket for the Train!
  • All the references have been returned and I now have a start date for my new job so I have a couple of weeks to rest up then get myself back into the fray.

Good luck to everyone who is still looking and Smidster, hope your first day goes well.
    Whatever
