Support Each Other In Looking For Work?

So today I'm waiting for a phone call to see if I got a Saturday job sterilizing surgical instruments. This has to be the worst part - just waiting, The interview went OK I think. I went in prepared to talk about some hardcore principals of science but it was quite general, more about organization and working methodically, Which fitted in with my history in admin work and my science base degree.
The only thing holding me back is that I cant drive (which wasn't an essential of the job) - to deliver instruments to hospital sites in the van and my own hang up that I'm a bit more on the plus size scale than I would like to be/have ever been and I'm worried scrubs wont fit me0 -
How was everyones day today ? mine went ok except had to do paperwork and watch some dvds and answer questions. Oh and the old "1 hand dont know what the other hand is doing" scenario crept in too.0

I'm unemployed in 3 weeks time and I've been applying for every admin job in a mental health department that I can find, I want to graduate get a PWP job and go from there. If you know of any national mental health charities or anything that might help please will you let me know, just trying to get something that will put me in the right direction (work in a mental health charity, an NHS Foundation Trust, CAMHS, private psychiatric hospitals etc etc)
The charity that i work for is Mind and they have been really helpful. Rethink is another major mental health charity who seem to always have a fair amount of jobs going across the country. I'm sure you have been doing this already, but make sure you regularly check the NHS website because they are always adding new jobs.
I have had my interview and i start once they have checked my references. I am really pleased i applied for the job because i said that i want to be a PWP and she said that she will talk to her manager about what experience they can give me and will try and set up regular meetings with the managers and PWPs to see what they can do to push me in the right direction. She did however say that she cannot promise me anything at the moment because she is just the head of admin, so she needs to check with her managers that they will be ok to do that.
She also said that she will introduce me to the head of Mind for the borough that i live in to see if she can give me any advice as well.
If you don't have much experience working with people with mental health issues i would advise you take on any voluntary jobs going in you local area. Not only will it give you some experience, but i have also found that i have made a few useful contacts out of it. The other thing i would suggest would be to maybe try support work. I've been applying for support work for people with learning difficulties and mental health issues in residential homes. It seems like a lot of places will take people with no experience because from what i understand, its quite hard work for bad pay (minimum wage), but there's so much competition for PWP jobs that just having a degree won't be enough.
Good luck!Knock me down I'll get right back up again, I'll come back stronger than a powered up Pac-Man0 -
My interview at Next was a waste of time, I would actually be at a loss of taking the job due to them only offering 8 hours work.
I had a good chat with a lady at my work programme and we are going to see about getting me further training/earn while you learn in youth and social work etc. Which is something I would love to do. When I come back off holiday we are going to have another meeting but she is going to try get me a placement yay.0 -
Just found out I have a second interview, and the person giving the interview is someone I know  and have happily worked with
.
Any clues on how I should conduct myself? Haven't been in this situation before?0 -

100% professional, remember that in work while there's an expected level of professionalism that should be in place - friends are great outside work and nothing stops you being friendly in work, but in this instance treat them as a potential employer, not a former colleague.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
May not be a 'job' perse but I may have an interview in the pipeline for a 12 week internship.
Would only pay limited travel expenses but would look good on the CV and give me some much needed experience.0 -
Coinoperatedgirl thank you. I have done lots of admin work so hopefully it'll see me into a job in admin in mental health... I have quite a lot of experience of volunteering supporting and mentoring vulnerable young people and families, once I get employment and I therefore know what shifts I have to work I'm going to get some voluntary work in mental health... Samaritans maybe.. thats the dream anyway.
HOWEVER... first hurdle! My interview for an admin person in a mental health team, which was scheduled for tomorrow, has been postponed for 3 weeks. And I'll be unemployed in 3 weeks. With no other interviews planned it's left me feeling rubbish, but have to keep going...
Well done morizot! If it's someone you know personally, you're going to have to be careful to be not at all casual... pretend you don't know them... and be extra alert for body language etc etc as they might be a bit weird about it too. That's all I can think of...OU Student! - ED209, SDK125, DSE212, SK124, DSE141, SD226, DXR222, DD303, DD307 = BSc Psychology0 -
