I had an interview back in May for Next.
It was a group interview, there were three others in my group. We all sat around a table whilst the interviewer looked through our application forms and asked each of us a couple of questions based on what we had put on them.
After that we all went out on to the shop floor and were given a department each. I got childrenswear for about 15 mins, and then I was moved to greeting. The interviewer walks around and makes notes. They want you to interact with customers and smile lot's!
I didn't get the job, but I wasn't expecting to. The other three girls all had years of shop experience, and I had none.
I wore normal interview clothes, black trousers and a navy blouse I bought as a treat from ASOS. One of the other women was dressed in really fashionable clothes, think it was a jumpsuit and wedges. I felt it was a bit informal really. Just wear what you are comfortable in but I found it wasn't as formal as other interviews.

Hi, I've reading this for a while, but it's my first post on this thread so hi all.
I currently have a part time job, but I sometimes only get 10 hours a week and I can't live off that. It's ultimately depressing.
I am a graduate, and after completing University last year I chose to travel for nearly 8 months. The past month or so though whilst I have been job searching has left me a little down. As soon as there is a glimmer of hope though, I perk straight back up. I've been thinking things over in my head like "should I have gone away" (even though a fair few of my friends tell me how Jealous they were/are of what I've done etc). It really does make your mind go in over drive does all this sitting around and spare time.
Today I went for an interview, to be told it was only a little chat and the real interview will be held next week. Part of me who has now turned a little anxious is just hoping she does ring back, but she said she will.
I have a telephone interview Friday.
I just wish someone out there would give me a chance ASAP and let me prove my worth.0 -
Thanks I expected it would be like that. They said the whole process takes about 30 minutes. I guess they want you to ask people if they want help, check displays are looking good, nothing on floor etc.
Got a call about another job, going to look through CVs and let me know. They were looking to interview the week I am on holiday but said could defer my interview to the next week.0 -
Just got back from holiday. Got two interviews arranged - wasn't expecting either to interview so that's good. In the meantime looking after my 2 monkeys until they start school, one this week and one next week - its his first day at primary school next Monday and he's half days for a week. He's admant he's not going and not wearing uniform so could be fun. :rotfl:
Congratulations to all those who got jobs and childcare (almost as hard as getting a job around here!). Not sure if things are picking up after the past quiet couple of months or not. Hopefully they will in September.
Welcome to Everynamestaken. I think travelling is fine and its the only time you have an opportunity to do travel for that long. Job searching is like banging your head against a brick wall but if you're getting interviews you will get something.0 -
I graduated 3 years ago and not really had a proper job since, been unemployed as much as I have worked! Been unemployed a year now but do plenty of voluntary work (about 23 hours) over 5 days so it's not too bad. Got first interview in ages tomorrow and really anxious about it eek.
Looks like I will have no chance of getting a job with Next as I can't do the evenings and really early mornings (4/5am) they seem to want when their sales are on or the Sundays and Bank Holidays as I rely on public transport.0 -
Hi guys
I had my first day at my new job went well and I am happy.
Good luck to everyone looking for work.0 -

The trainer asked about this other voluntary job i applied for and i said i haven't heard any thing back. He said he would chase it up for me because he thinks that i have a good chance of getting it. They phoned me up this morning and i've got an interview on weds
The voluntary job is just an admin assistant job, but its in a mental health centre for a psychological wellbeing practitioner and it said on the job description that you will help with doing triage and risk assessments etc. Its for 1 day a week for 6 months so its quite a commitment, but i'm hoping that once i have done that they will take me on as a trainee psychological wellbeing practitioner as the government has a recruitment drive of these every year.
Good luck for the week guys.
This sounds really good, congrats on the interview! I've done a load of admin work and am studying for a psychology degree at the mo. I'm unemployed in 3 weeks time and I've been applying for every admin job in a mental health department that I can find, I want to graduate get a PWP job and go from there. If you know of any national mental health charities or anything that might help please will you let me know, just trying to get something that will put me in the right direction (work in a mental health charity, an NHS Foundation Trust, CAMHS, private psychiatric hospitals etc etc)
Glad you had a great first day hello2007, hope it's the first of many for you! Good luck to everyone with interviews or job start dates coming up, I have an interview for an admin job at a mental health department on Thursday, I told my psychiatric nurse today and he told me that's the department he is based at! Know everything I say to him is confidential and I don't have any psychiatric problem as such (I'm seeing a psychiatric nurse rather than a counsellor because of self harm risk a few months back thats all) but it's still odd!
Everynamestaken just wanted to add - I volunteered abroad for 8 months also, came back in Feb... put it in my employment history listing skills learnt etc and so far it's been looked on really positively, so don't worry too much. Job hunting is hard (and getting harder, I'm finding it much harder to find a job now than when I was hunting in Sept 09 and Feb 11) chin up, smile and we're all here for you! xOU Student! - ED209, SDK125, DSE212, SK124, DSE141, SD226, DXR222, DD303, DD307 = BSc Psychology0 -

I had a bit of good news yesterday - I was offered the job I was interviewed for last Friday - I have been very lucky as it was the first interview I have had after being made redundant. I start a week on Monday :j:j:j
To everyone still looking for work - please try to stay positive ! I feel as I have been on a roller coaster the last couple of monthes - some days feeling positive and others in the depths of despair. I was convinced I was going to have to leave the industry i have worked in all my life and start afresh somewhere new on a lot less money. In the end I have managed to get a job in the field I have experience and on more money than before. I don/t want to be flippant saying there is something out there for everyone - but please please do try and stay positive . I made a list of things I wanted to do around the house and garden and have slowly ticked off quite a few of them - that way I felt that at least I was achieving something while I was out of work.
I just want to thank everyone on this thread as I have really used peoples comments to keep me positive.
I truly wish everyone the best of luck in their searches
I had a really nice, helpful JobCentre droid too, I guess I just got lucky. Good luck to everyone still looking.Whatever0 -
Counted the number of interviews that I have had, 13. Around 5 at the beginning, I have lost due to lack of interview practise, 4 because my skills didn't match, 1, I was pipped by an internal candidate
Two interviews I felt my interview technique let me down
Was feeling quite down when an agent phoned me, the last interview went well and I am down to a shortlist of 2. I was worried because I confessed more than I would have liked on my weaknesses (as I had already used up an ideal example answering a previous question and had to come up with another example) but they must have liked my honesty
That makes me feel so much better. Regardless of whether I get the job or not, I know now that my interview skills are now acceptable.
Phew!0
