Not sure if this has been posted as it's been a while since I've been posting reguarly in this topic but I've just come across this blog

    http://skillsconnect.eu/blog/?p=24

It talks about the best sites offering free CV reviews. I've just sent mine to The CV Store and The CV Centre. Seems very straight forward and they promise a response within 24 hours.

I've had my CV review back. The CV Centre said it was excellent but could be more eyecatching and the CV Store was much more thorough, the main problem being that it needs to be more exciting and eyecatching. So how can I make an admin CV exciting and eyecatching?

And to those people asking about getting experience through voluntary work I walked into my local Age Concern Centre. The Centre Manager gave me a quick interview (very informal) to find out my interests and areas of expertise and said the tutor who takes the computer class needed help as you can guarantee everyone will ask a question at the same time so I go once a week and assist. I have also covered the reception during holidays and also worked clearing tables in the cafe (which also involves lots of chatting with the customers) so I get a nice variety of different jobs to do.

I am so excited. I found a job on the job centre today so I emailed over a quick covering letter with my cv. The MD got back to me within 45 minutes and I have a telephone interview tomorrow. It has been so disenchanting trying to find work just like you have felt EndlessStruggle. Sending off so many applications and nver hearing a dickie bird. Obviously it is only an interview so the job search slog may still not be over but its a break at least!

I need a job, need money to be able to go nice places with lovely new boyfriend and to move out etc.
    But
my voluntary work is my ultimate dream job and a search for funding has been bought up but seems to be a dead end. The dreaded impact of my leaving has also been discussed. It really gets me down as in my last job, although only temp work, there was no respect, appreciation or anything and I get a lot of it there and I mean a lot of it! I get praised everyday from other volunteers, clients, supervisors or the manager. It has done wonders for my confidence, my last job battered it down to like 0% and it has raised to about 80%. I wasn't even confident enough to speak to or phone clients when I first started and now I do it all the time and it doesn't even phase me. I also make a lot of decisions and am asked for help by other volunteers. I am like a new person! And I know that I am not going to get as much job satisfaction for about 95% of the jobs I apply for :(
  • Good luck Montymud, I'm sure you will rock it out!!

    Hello guys,

    Can I join you please?!

I'm an experienced secretary/administrator who has been looking for work since May and despite LOADS of applications I've not had too much luck... yet :)

I saw posts about people getting admin work experience, this might help:

    http://jobseekers.direct.gov.uk/homepage.aspx?sessionid=06770194-13d2-4348-848a-87e694990f18&pid=1

Scroll down and click on 'search for voluntary work', you can then choose area, interests etc and it will give you a list of volunteer positions.

There were quite a few in my area so I hope there are as many in other areas and that the people that wanted the job experience can find something to suit them.

ETA: a really annoying feature of this website is that you can't save particular jobs and come back to them later, all it does when you click on the link you have saved is to show you the home page again!! So if you can't reply there and then, take down the full details or you'll have to go trawling through all the jobs again to find the ones you were interested in....

    Hi Everyone
I've seen a job this morning which would be perfect for me
(an area I have experience & my degree in which will be a lot more than other applicants- without blowing my trumpet!)& it's in my town (not many come up here as it's a small town) the thing is they have stated its 40hrs over 7 days (shifts 7am-3pm/3pm-11pm-) I'd love to go for it but in the week I have to drop off & pick up my son from school(no-one else can do it & husband works, don't really want to do childcare)& ideally look after him till husband gets back (6ish) but then I could work nights & work all weekends for them.
I'd also be aware I'd be asking for my hours to shift around in the school hols.
Do you think I'd be cheeky going to the interview & seeing what they say?or should I ring first & ask about flexibility or maybe part time/job share position instead before I persue furthur? .
I'm aware they have said these hours to fit there business needs but wonder if flexibility would be there as it's coming up to xmas the busy time in this particular industry & I have a feeling they are wanting a couple/few people.
    What would you do???:(

I would find out more without mentioning your personal circumstances, unless asked. Only when all looks positive and you are close to getting an offer would I then talk about your situation. I think it is a little like discussing pay and perks, leave this until last.

When my job disappeared I mourned the excellent flexible hours, holidays, location, friends and pay. I won't get the same elsewhere. I have had time now to get over my sadness and accept that the job has gone.

You have achieved a lot from your voluntary job. Allow yourself time to mourn then try and accept that you do need the money. At least when you have had a bad day, you can console yourself on what a wonderful job you can do in the right environment and also how much money you are being paid. Good luck

Thanks for the reply morizot. I'm not too sure what you mean about finding out more (do you mean asking about part time etc) if you think I shouldn't mention personal circumstances until close to getting an offer.
The thing is I could work the 40hrs but not really at there set times.
I guess I'm been so cheeky wishing my degree & experience will bowl them over that they'll bend over backwards to meet all my demands for me! lol!:rotfl:
    All help appreciated!!
