I'm sitting here all fed up with nothing to do and nowhere to go and the only jobs that I have applied for are ones that I don't particularly want (of course its any port in a storm at the moment and should I be offered one I will be eternally grateful).
I thought that as well when I took a 12 month contract in April 2010, however it didn't actually turn out that way. I keep thinking though surely things have got to get better soon.
I have to say my mortgage company (Nationwide) have been excellent through both my periods of unemployment. I was absolutely terrified when I picked the phone up to ring them and was nearly in tears. I rang the number that they give you for if you are having trouble making your payments and they were really helpful and not threatening at all. I think that whilst I was paying something towards it they were happy. During the year that I was employed I paid extra each month so that by the second period of unemployment I had a nice overpayment and they were happy for me to pay a reduced amount each month until the overpayment is gone but my mortgage is not very big by today's standards so perhaps that is why. Once the overpayment has gone I will have to re-negotiate but hopefully by then I will have a job.
Good luck and I hope I haven't gone on too much!
You didn't go on at all! Really nice to hear other people's situations.
thanks for the mortgage advise, have put it off though - I will do it tomorrow! I have fairly small mortgage as well compared to most, . Hoping they are going to agree to 3 month break, to give me extra time, will see what happens tomorrow
Gonna go for that 14 month contract one anyway, if I could get experience in that sector, then it would be great as it is where I really want to be!0 -
Applied for 1 job this week i think, theres nothing else for this week i can apply for,
It has definitely been a tough few weeks job wise, but where I am I think it has picked up this last week... so there is some hope.
Think I am just applying for anything, anywhere - probably over qualified/ under qualified.
Hope things pick up for you soon0 -
Hi all, just thought I would check in and see how everybody is getting on.
I have about a month left max in my temporary job and then I am back to square one. It's a year now since I graduated and I am no closer to getting a 'proper' job. There's been hardly anything at all to apply for locally for weeks, I spent two hours on Wednesday filling in an application form for a job which is only a 7 hour a week contract.
I just don't know what to do next. I was thinking of doing the TEFL course which is on groupon at the minute, but I am in a relationship and just moving abroad isn't really an option. I cannot face been on JSA again, there's no way I am going back there. I am trying my best to save every penny I am earning but after paying back the money I borrowed when I was out of work there won't be a lot left.
I'm just sick of this country really, nothing is getting better, if anything it is getting worse.0 -

I know how you feel! I graduated in 2008 and STILL haven't found that "proper" job! In all honesty, I wish I'd never bothered with uni and got a job straight from school, I'd probably be in a much better position than I am now! I really think my generation were told "if you don't go to uni, you don't get a good job" which really isn't the case anymore!
After saying I hate Friday's earlier, I'm not long off the phone to organise an interview in 2 weeks. Unfortunately, it's only temporary again, through an agency, and not exactly what I'm looking for (or where I want to work) but I can't turn down the chance!0 -

I totally agree. I am working as a cleaner for a student housing company, and have told so many students to get out now before they get in anymore debt! It's a complete waste of time.
I was getting very depressed about it today as I was cleaning dirty bedrooms and picking up used condoms from under the bed, thinking this is where university (and £20k+ of debt) has got me.0 -
Nuttyone, I read your post and felt like crying. I know exactly where you are. I left the job I hated nearly three months ago - I nearly walked out at Christmas but managed to keep it together and eventually got voluntary redundancy. The money won't last forever but it's giving me a breathing space.
I was at the Jobcentre yesterday and when I mentioned how much I'd hated my former job the advisor couldn't believe I'd stuck it for over seven years. Looking back now, I agree I was crazy to stay so long - my confidence was so badly eroded that I only applied for three other jobs in all that time.
I suppose what I'm saying is please DON'T think you have no other options and do keep on looking for something else. It's hard in the current economic climate, I know, but there are jobs out there and you should be looking forward to getting married not feeling this miserable about your job.
Think about what you'd really like to do and start taking steps to make it happen. It might not happen overnight but you'll get there. I wish I hadn't stayed where I was for seven miserable years now. I wish you well.0 -

Uni or not I think its pretty tricky either way at the mo.
I graduated in 2003 (feel really old saying that) and even then didn't go into the best job, but there were so many more opportunities i managed to work my way up.... the crazy thing is that 8 years later my only way to get employment will be to start again - but with even less opportunites and whole lot more responsbilities!0 -
Just a little vent. Am looking for administration/reception work at the mo. I went into our local council's website and I saw three jobs I would love to do including one that I've been wanting to do when I started my HNC.
However they're all advertised internally. That's what I don't get. Why advertise on the website if you are only accepting people who work within the organisation??? I look everyday for administration jobs. But they are far and few between. I could understand if I was looking for an unusual job but it's just administration I want to do.:(0 -
Hi peeps, can i ask your advice, where it says "Please use space below to add any additional information, which you feel, has not been covered and which you would like us to take into consideration eg other training, relevant experience, any interests"
does it mean i need to say why i should think i should be offered the job etc etc, do you think its the type of thing to go in the box.
Then ill have to write why i should work for X company when to me its a job that pays
Off you go, up the wooden hill to get your jim-jams on!
Hi peeps
I'm new to this thread so I apologise if someone else has already responded to your question.
The additional information page is the place where you match your own skills and experience as closely to the job specifications. For example, if they've said they want someone with strong interpersonal and networking skills, this is your opportunity to talk about the big event you organised (could be work-related or the school fete).
This section definitely takes the longest but it's worth taking the time and coming up with one example for everything they say they want. Miss something out at your peril. I learnt this the hard way a few years back when I failed to provide evidence that I was a quick learner (how would they know it was true anyway?). I didn't get an interview and when I asked why not, they quoted this 'gap' in my application.
Good luck with the job-hunting - it's so time-consuming though, isn't it?0 -
Eek. Sorry folks - and peeps. I've quoted peeps and then answered her post but make such a mess of it, it now looks like I write the question and the answer. Sorry!!0
