Support Each Other In Looking For Work?

Two rejections today. First one was fine (they wanted a techie which I am not). Second one didn't come up with enough competancy based examples. Fair enough but the agency didn't pass the message over very well. I guess I don't like someone in a very thick west midlands regional accent bearing bad news and (probably unintentionally) coming over as slightly patronising, brings out the intolerant snob in me;) (I need to improve my attitude).
At least I had feedback. Will work on my competancy based examples in the meantime (though not through the agent).
Does everyone get the 'you have a lovely personality and came across well' message when they get feedback? Is it similar to 'you came second' which so many people seem to hear?
Sorry to hear about your rejection letters. Hopefully things will pick up soon.
Competency based interview are definitely not my favourite, but i think i am getting better with each one. practising with example definitly helps.

I started in April. 20 odd years at the same company means I was very rusty and inexperienced at the beginning. Growing in confidence daily although sometimes I can get very stressed (e.g., today when I received two rejections). Happy about my situation though because I have had the summer off, I have realised my skills are in demand and I have realised that I was not happy in my old job. I am enjoying meeting new people and finding out about other companies, get stressed on the days when there is no progress. I spent the last year at work, turning up with nothing to do, compared to that, being made redundant is bliss, at least I am my own boss0 -
Hi all,
I don't seem to be getting anywhere tbh.
I had an interview last week but haven't even heard back from them, so know that was a non-starter. I was probably punching above my weight with that one
Is anyone in the same position as me - lots of qualifications, but absolutely no recent work experience?
I have to admit that I'm lucky as I'm not desperate for a job -- I can cope ok for a while yet, but at the same time I'd like to get something under my belt. Even a week's paid work here and there so I can get used to it.
I know I'm capable but I'm also a very anxious person and part of the reason I've never been in employment is this. The other part is that I've always been studying oen thing or another (though I have no excuses for not having a part-time job).
Has anyone in my position has much luck with agencies? I'd be happy doing anything - the more tedious the better for me tbh, as monotonous iwould be easier to deal with at first.0 -

Hi,
My outplacement contact and my soon to be ex boss dislike agencies as they are usually poor in providing feedback and are difficult to chase. You can try chasing the agencies but often it is a waste of time. You could try targetting companies directly thus bypassing the agencies. Make sure the letter goes to the area you want to work in, rather than HR (names can be found on linkedin)
I would always work with an anxious person rather than an overbearing, overconfident person.
I guess you have already thought of this, but voluntary work to get the experience?0 -
Hi all
I'm new to this side of the forums and to jobseeking really. I've been looking since around May, but have sent out the majority of my applications in the last month.
I'm currently working on my Ph.D. (only 6 months max left - just some editing work) and my funding runs out at the end of September so it will only be DH's wage coming in then. I would have liked a lectureship post but there are none going at my institution at the moment and most places ask for an established research record (which I haven't got at the moment due to working on said Ph.D.) - what I want though is a job I love doing (and that pays well!) - doesn't everyone?!
I was rejected for the first application put in without an interview ("overqualified") but I've managed to get an interview at the job I really wanted when sending out applications. It's not really related to what I do, but it sounds like something I'd enjoy doing. The money's quite good and the post is permanent. I'm super nervous and really can't think of anything else at the moment - that's on Tuesday.
I got another rejection the other day for a clerk/typist job (didn't have the RSA II qualification) and one this morning for a research support officer (wanted someone with a background in Psychology - not my area). I did get a phonecall asking me to interview for another job this Friday but had to turn it down as the job was in another of the company's offices around 45mins (did not state on the advert!).
I do have more applications out there waiting to hear back, so fingers crossed I have other opportunities if this one falls through. I've also signed up with a couple of agencies, and one which I've yet to hear back from. I saw a great temp job with a company I've temped for during my undergraduate years so I know the place well, and I've heard nothing back. Even after 2 emails to ask, have you received my application, nothing! And here's me thinking that these people were in the recruitment business!
That's where I am at the moment. DH says I'm pinning too much hopes on this interview next week - and I probably am - but I would really love this job. I'm trying to research the job, read up on interview questions and techniques, etc.
Good luck to everyone who had interviews todayIn the process of buying our first house :j Offer accepted 22/040 -
Grrrr why cant 2 departments and government ones at that talk to each other. Some numpty is using my NI number and our records were mixed up and the JC thought i was this other person who has 15k and lives in newbury which i dont due to signing on at another job centre which is miles away from newbury0

This sounds horribly familiar. I was previously unemployed for around 2 years due to illness. During this time I was getting Incapacity Benefit, Income Support (a whole 6p) and Council Tax Benefit. I got a terrifying letter from the Benefits Agency asking me to go in as they needed to speak to me. It transpired that the Inland Revenue had got records of 4 people living at my address as well as me who were all apparently working (not true as i lived on my own) and the BA were basically accusing me of committing benefit fraud. Luckily I had had a visit from the Council who were checking that I had told the truth on my application form for Council Tax benefit and had come to look at my house (a little terraced house). They were able to tell the Benefits Agency that they were positive that it was only me living at the property and eventually they backed down after a lot of letters.0 -
Well, I signed up to a few agencies this morning. In general I haven't heard the most positive of things but I won't dismiss them immediately. I've been asked to forward my C.V. to them this morning so it's a case of waiting really to see if they have anything. I have mentioned before that I have part-time work, but 14 hours a week in a very expensive house really does get you down. I just about had enough this month to buy some fruit...:(0

After I finished Uni I had several temping jobs through agencies, so if you are looking for something short term while you're also looking for permanent work then they may well be able to help - depending on what's currently available in your area.
I registered with Hays Office Support recently and they occasionally texted me for one or two day placements (I didn't accept as I had interviews each time!).
Good luck!
