The 2 weeks have now just finished but I have not heard from them. Do you think it would be a good idea to phone them just to remind them, or shall I wait for another week?

By the way, the original interview was arranged via email. So, do you think it would be better if email them to ask when they will be calling me back rather than phoning them?

I would either email them to see if they have made a decision or phone them, but I wouldn't email to ask when they will call.

    Fingers crossed for you!

My application form got me an interview :j
It sounded like they had a lot of responses as they said they had two waves of short listing applications (gulp).

I've also got an opportunity to go for an assessment day for an agency who place graduates in sales roles.

Please could you give me advice about whether I should go?

    Reasons why not:
    • I don't really have sales experience and I'm still hoping to get a non-sales job
    • Have to travel to London for the day
    • Its run by the agency, not directly by an employer
    • Supposed to be working that afternoon

    Reasons for:
    • It could lead to a job!
    • New experience
    • Networking
    • I can stay over with family the night before
    Thank you.

My stress and anxiety is now manifesting itself in nightmares although after a couple of weeks I now seem to be managing to get a bit of control and wake myself up before they get really distressing :(

So I've got a new plan! Edinburgh isn't working for me and I'd been thinking about moving back to London for a long time. Today I have started applying for roles down there, I figure applying in two areas doubles my chances and the market for my experience is much larger down there.

With a little luck (and help from the Jobcentre for travel to interview costs, fingers crossed) I might just get my little plan to work!

I have also promised a good friend I will make an appointment with the Dr next week as, in his words, I'm going mental and shouldn't be trying to cope alone when I don't have to. Wrists slapped I shall do as I'm told for once and get some support, whether it's a referral to a head doctor or whatever else is suggested :o

Thanks in advance for your response.

Personally, I'd call rather than email, purely because then you'll just be sitting waiting on a response to the email and they might not even reply at all! At least on the phone you might get a little bit more of an insight as to what's happening. I'd maybe give them a couple of extra days and phone Wednesday and just say you're following up from your interview as you hadn't heard back yet.

Sorry to hear about the nightmares and stress, at least it sounds like you have a plan.

Are you putting a London address on your details for the London jobs? I can see your Edinburgh location putting people off otherwise.

    Good luck with it

So far it's just been CV's and covering letters through recruitment sites and email and my address isn't on those ;)

Should I need to fill in something more thorough I can use a friends address but it should be no more off putting that I'm thinking about relocating than someone who has to give a month's notice to their current employer :o

I would advise against pretending to live in London - otherwise a company may expect you to turn up for interview tomorrow and get very annoyed with you if you won't do that. If they know you're coming from Edinburgh, they'll be more flexible with interview times!

I had my Scottish address on my CV when I applied for work in London - didn't do me any harm. The agency told my current boss how fabulous I was, then casually mentioned I lived very far away indeed. By that point, I already sounded interesting enough to meet, so an interview was set up. Recruitment consultants want their commission - they'll get around the Edinburgh issue for you!

I know the rules on travel costs have changed now, so I hope your Job Centre has money in the pot for you. Have you told your advisor that you're looking for work in London? Might be a good idea to bring it up now, so it's not a big shock when you land an interview and want some help with travel costs. :)

Only just made sort of plans over the weekend but I next see my advisor, a very helpful one who has already said he'd give me a pass for a months bus pass when I start work, on Wednesday coming so I'll chat to him then.

Worst comes to worse Megabus is £16 return and I have somewhere to stay. I can use the buses instead of tube if I'm really broke too.

Now I may get a job in Edinburgh first, which will be more than a little disappointing but at least I'm feeling like I have a bit more of a plan now!

Life rarely goes to plan, but it's still good to have one!:p Widening your job search can only lead to more opportunities.

The one thing I will say is that I found the initial move to London really expensive - I had to find money upfront for a deposit, one month's rent in advance, travelcard, etc. Can you stay with your family for a couple of months until your first few paychecks come through? That would really help. Best to ask the favour in principle now, rather than bag a job and hope for the best!

Really hope things work out for you. It was hard leaving Scotland, but the job I'm doing now isn't something I would have been able to find up in bonnie Alba. Having made the move, I don't regret it.

Can you afford the afternoon off? If so, I would go, but I would treat it as a chance to see family, more than anything. If I'm nervous about an interview, I try to make plans to see friends/family, so I get thinking about seeing them, relax a bit and slip into friends mode, i.e. nice normal human being who people like to be around rather than interview mode i.e. crazy unhinged lady who can't stop shaking! Amazing how you can trick yourself into performing well. ;)

It might just be another crummy job - or it could turn out to be an amazing opportunity. For the chance of it being an amazing opportunity, I would be inclined to give it a shot, unless I would really struggle without the money from the afternoon's work. It really depends on how stretched you are at the moment.

I lived in London before, already have friends down there. I have to find somewhere to live before I go as I have two cats who wouldn't be terribly impressed at being shoved in someone's shed for a couple of months ;)

There's no love lost between me and Edinburgh, I love the city but I'm claustrophobic for a number of reasons and would not be sad to leave!

My industry is residential lettings so I'm more than aware of moving costs, I have a plan for that too (need to check that's feasible as well).

My life has done the polar opposite of go to plan for the last 2-3 years, I've learned they're just a general synopsis of what I'd maybe like to happen and that actually nothing of the sort comes about!
