Thank you to everyone for their support and their help.

I now have a job, eek :o. It is as a catering assistant in a Sainsburys cafe and I hope that I get to learn a lot of new skills.

I was jobless for a week but it was a frustrating time.

Not dropped in to say hello in a while, but I've been very busy with the new job - and I suppose you could say, new life, seeing as I've moved so many miles away!

I'm slowly taking on more responsibilities in my new job and feeling more confident about it. I've offered to take on additional work outside my job description, purely because it interests me and my boss seems keen for me to get involved. Those of you who have followed my story from the beginning may remember I ended up looking for a job because my previously employer sacked me for not passing a professional exam. My current boss has suggested I resit that exam, has offered to support it (with training costs and time off) and is not putting any pressure on me to pass. :T

I really do feel incredibly lucky. When I was served notice in my last job, I thought it was the end of the world, that no one would ever employ me again and that I was a big fat idiot who should give up on her career. What a difference a few months makes... I really do now think that things happen for a reason, so if you don't get the job you go for, it's because the one after that is far more suitable for you and it will be amazing. I hope my story can give a little bit of hope to those of you still searching for work.

Steph, really sorry to hear about jury service messing up your plans. Is it possible to defer? It does sound like you've had more than your share of knocks recently. You are intelligent and you are hard-working, so I am hoping like mad for you that some good news wings its way to you soon.

Hope things are going well for you, Drea.

Congratulations to charlie-chan, savvygranny, asparagus, candy and paulfoel on your new jobs. :)

Stew, sounds like you rocked that first interview. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that the next one goes just as well.

925dancer, hoping for good news for you soon! :)

With regards to CV writing, I don't think there are any hard and fast rules about which way to align text, as long as you use a consistent approach. I do agree with putting your contact details at the top of the first page (and only on the first page) and not using colour, however.

If you apply through an agency, bear in mind they will totally rewrite your CV to suit them, anyway!

I feel a bit guilty, I've been coming on here now and then for a whinge and haven't said much about other people. I have been reading and keeping up with everything though :)

Steph - I hope you find something soon, I think it's shocking that company let you down simply because of jury service, it's not something you can help. Keep your spirits up.

Stew - Fingers crossed for this job! You've done well to stick it out where you are and I hope you get this one.

Aspargus - Good luck on your first day tomorrow, let us know how it goes :)

Persa - I'm glad you're settling in well, sometimes something completely new stops being scary and is a bit fun ;)

Everyone who has found jobs - Well done!

Everyone who hasn't - Try to stay positive, I think things will work out for us all one at a time. As for me, I still am none the wiser as to whether I get to keep my job or not but I'm off on holiday on Tuesday so I'm refusing to worry about it until I get back ;)

Ah, but the more you whinge, the more new posters see it's ok for them to have a whinge too, so you're being supportive really in your own way. ;)

I don't say enough about other people either, but I do thank every post I read, so if I haven't said anything about any of you, if there is a thanks from me, I am keeping up with your news! :)

Thanks. :) Being back in work has done wonders for my self-confidence. Sometimes I look in the mirror and feel proud of myself, rather than a big failure. I don't think I ever was a big failure, I must add, but being unemployed does crazy things to your head. I really don't think this is acknowledged enough - people don't enjoy being paid JSA, all they want is to do an honest day's work!

Is it getting time for you to start a part 2 thread, Drea? I was wondering how long we could keep this thread going for before breaking the MSE forum...

Well, I hope you have a great time. It's out of your hands now, so the only thing you can do is enjoy yourself. ;)

    Persa and Drea,

Your last posts are what this thread is all about, giving support to each other while we're looking for employment and I hope you'll keep posting here. Everybody needs to have a whinge every now and then and doing it to people who are sat at their computers nodding their agreement makes you feel much better. Hearing the good news may make you feel jealous but it does give some encouragement.

I think MSEs' rule is that threads should be renewed at about 5,000 posts.

Hope everybody has a good week, if the sun stays out try and get out in it, don't feel guilty about it.

Have a good holiday Drea, how long are you away for? We'll miss you here while you're away.

Thanks, Stew.:) I agree wholeheartedly about enjoying the sunshine - it's important to give yourself a break every now and again.

Sunday today, so best wishes to everyone for a fresh start tomorrow and lots of new jobs to apply for. :)

Thanks, I just can't wait to go now! It's sunny here but I'm stuck in tidying up the flat as a friend is looking after the cats while we're away and the least I can do is give him a tidy flat ;)

Then it's time to pack  I have a huge To Do List and not enough time to do them!

I'll make a new thread tomorrow night before I go and hopefully I'll come back to some more of you having good news :) things certainly seem to have picked up a bit with more people finding jobs on here.

Well, back to the tidying ;)

It certainly sounds like you've landed on your feet and have settled in well, glad everything has turned out so well for you.

It certainly feels like I have! I did consider deferring but with starting uni in September I don't want to run the risk of it disrupting my studies so in the long run it's probably best to get it over and done with.

Thank you. It really is terrible, I was completely stunned, she knew I was having to do it so it was the fact she offered me the job and then withdrew her offer that really got to me.

    Have a great holiday!!

I've decided that if by September I'm still unemployed I'm signing up with a supply agency for schools. I signed up with them last May but didn't get any work as it was too close to the summer holidays. I couldn't afford a new CRB with them earlier this year so think I'll save my JSA to pay for one in September. At least that will be flexible round my studies and will hopefully bring in a bit of money.

    That's Plan B anyway :)

Many thanks for sharing your story persa, it sounds like the previous employer did you a favour because it led you to a more suitable job that you obviously enjoy.

I now think that my redundancy is a good thing. Through self study I have discovered that I do like the work that I do and have become more knowledgeable in my subject (and have an exam to pass next month). I enjoy finding out about the different employers, meeting them and I look forward to the time when I find work. All the hoops that we need to jump through to get a job are just techniques that can be learnt (and I am improving all the time) and are useful lifeskills. In the meantime I am enjoying my liberty and being my own boss. It is also a very useful lifeskill to accept set backs as they happen to everyone (A particularly relevant one for me to learn, I am really no good accepting set backs). When I look back on my soon to be ex-employer, I realise that I am looking forward to officially leaving.

Hats off to anyone like you Persa who has had to overcome a dismissal and the effect that would have had on your self confidence. Your story inspires me and gives me encouragement
