Please let us know what Go Ape is like. We have been planning a trip there since last Summer. There was a Go Ape at Dalby Forest and it looks terrifying  I'd like to know if there's a whimps course, or if you have to do every bit of the course because I could not do some of those zip lines

Gorgeous isn't it. I loved the little streams.

Forgot to say too, I've only got about £60 to pay on my holiday now with birthday money and the little bit of money I've been saving in my paypal account from surveys :j

Anyway back to the job hunt. Just completed an application form this morning, still got another to do but the closing date isn't until the 16th and I really am struggling to motivate myself this week. :o

Oh don't tell me that, I'm already scared enough! We're off tomorrow morning

I am absolutely knackered. Been working today for that company, I've never realised how hard it in on your body to lift paper around and punch holes all day :rotfl:

They said they'll probably get me in next week too. Every little helps!

Found 3 part time jobs to apply for this evening. One of them is at a Nursery where I actually got offered a job 2 years ago but had to turn it down when I got into College.

    Good Morning

Recently on this forum, there were a group of people who were thinking of looking at other people's CV's and giving ideas on improvement etc. Am I correct?

Would it be ok if I could post my CV for advice on how to improve it etc?

    Thank You.

I applied for a job after seeing a sign in the window of a new shop which will be opening in a few weeks and it sounded right up my street as I'm something of a foodie.

I just want to know, either way. How long do you think I should leave it before I get in touch with them? And how should I word it if I do? There's an e-mail address, which I used to apply, I'd feel better contacting by e-mail. Should I say something like "I wondered if you could let me know when you will be informing successful candidates, or if you could tell me if I have been unsuccessful at this time?'. Basically "Did I get ajob or not!"

Part of your answer lies in the question. The shop is to open in a couple of weeks so the people running it are obviously going to be very busy organising things. They may not be giving a thought to your predicament thinking that you are a student and so not geoing to be going anywhere fast. Also they may have decided to open and see how things go before hiring any part time staff.

You can either wait nearer to the opening before enquiring further saying "you are opening soon, do you need any temp help" or if you really have to know then contact them saying "I really like the job and it's part time nature but I have another iron in the fire and need to make a decision. I don't want to miss out of what I really would enjoy doing (extra enthusiasm :D).

Don't be embarrassed about approaching them after a suitable period of time, say a week or so after you think that they have completed the interviews.

    Good luck :)

  • I was thinking about sitting down and making a list of all the local businesses in my area and just firing off a cv to them in the hope that I may find some work that way. Has anyone ever done this, and is it worth doing or just a waste of time? I can't help thinking that if a business was looking for someone it would be advertised.

First of all well done on getting some voluntary work relevant to your qualifications, it can only help.

As for the scatter gun approach to job applications it's akin to throwing seed around, some will fall on fallow ground and some may germinate. It's all very random.

Employers vary wildly from those old school ones who do their own recruitment and when receiving an speculative application will either put it on file for future reference or reply directly one way or the other. These employers are getting rarer.

Others have simply outsourced their whole recruitment activities to agents even to the point that the agents conduct the interviews. This is the opposite extreme and there are a host of variations on a this theme in between.

It comes down to time and cost. I would recommend listing the employers, trying to decide what types they are (big = they have a HR dept; small = they probably use agents) and try the direct approach to those that you rank have the best chance of having a response. To simply fire of speculative CV's to all and sundry will cost either a lot of money if using post or nothing if using e-mail.

When I was made redundant 7 years ago I did this firing off of speculative CV's to suitable employers in my line of business and did not get one reply. Not really surprising as the whole industry was going downhill fast in those days. Then when I interviewed 18 months ago for my present employer I was asked if I sent in my CV when I was made redundant (I didn’t realise it at the interview that they were very interested in me). When I confirmed that I had they were very surprised I did not get a reply and this was the dept engineering manager. This is a big multi-national engineering contractor with an HR dept but rely on agents for finding people for them (I was contacted by an agent who set up the interview)

It just goes to show there is no rhyme or reason to this recruiting malarkey :)

Thanks for your reply. I e-mailed them last Thursday and received a reply on Saturday saying they had had many applicants for the Saturday positions and had managed to find candidates who exactly matched their specification (they hadn't shared the specification so it's hard to know exactly what it was that I didn't match but heyho).

They did need to staff up before opening, given the shift patterns they were advertising, if they didn't have any 'Saturday staff' there would only be 1 person working in the shop on a Saturday otherwise.

I've found some work doing freelance audio typing now, just hope I can continue to meet their very strict standards!

    Morning all,

no jobs here to apply for - and have seen a load on-line that I have applied for in the past still there, just getting more applicants.... ho hum.

been a horrid day. I have just been to the doctors and been given 3 prescriptions for 5 things that i can't afford, and i don't have my exeption certificate through because the council seem to be taking forever. I made the mistake of calling them while out, and they made me cry (probably that time of the month coming...) and then to top it all off while in town i weighed myself (20 p instead of £5 at slimming world) and even though i have been really good (too skint for chocolate) i thought i had put on 2lbs..... (had in fact lost 4) didn't help with the crying thing though...

How do you all do it? i have been off for 4 weeks and am already so bored and apparently tearful.
