I thought the exact same when I read it ;)

The fact is, people who aren't unemployed at the moment just don't realise how difficult it actually is to find something! They all get on a high horse about it because they assume it CAN'T be that difficult. Don't let it get to you.

Glad it wasn't just me! I think I'll stick to the nice people in here from now on.
I'm finding voluntary work harder to get than a job. Did a shift in a charity shop but the owner was very rude to me and the one other person there didn't speak to me despite several attempts at conversation so I politely declined from going back. Being sending off applications through the do-it website but no-one has got back to me so far. Meant to be hearing from a community radio station this week, but no joy so far and I'm in the middle of writing a begging letter for another voluntary position.
I'm loving my census job but got nothing lined up for when that finishes :(

I actually agree with this. I've applied for a few things on the Do It and heard nothing back. I emailed a charity last week and made an appointment to discuss possible voluntary opportunities. I got there and they were not interested, the only thing she could offer was fundraising which isn't going to get me a job anywhere else. I felt worse than ever after it, thinking I couldn't even give away my time for free!

The last day of my professional course went really well. I'm now daring to hope I might actually pass the exam next month - if I do, I will be able to apply for a whole heap of jobs that I can't apply for now. Ooh, I can almost smell employment again...

In the meantime, my one and only interview is next week and the job centre has just called to get some more details to sort out my application for a rail warrant. They'll get that finalised for me on Friday.

I have to admit, I'm a little bit worried about the possibility of the job centre checking up on me with the interviewer. I understand why they would want to confirm I attended the interview, but I'm a bit anxious that revealing I'm on benefits will negatively affect the way the employer sees me. I know I'm being stupid, but I feel bad enough about being unemployed, let alone admitting I've had to ask for help. I'm a very proud person, so being out of work and relying on my OH and the government is really difficult for me.

Anyone else having a wobble today?

hi everyone, so like everyone else i can't find much to apply for and its hampered even more due to me working abroad from june.

One positive was that i had a call yesterday about possible work during may but after asking my rates and telling them, the job that seemed definite turned into "oh, we're still at the possibility stage and just asking to find out costs". So i'm quite doubtful that will happen now but i'm not to downhearted about it which surprised me.
I've got a few things to keep me occupied, driving test at the end of may and a visa interview next week for the foreign job. Hope the visa stuff goes ok because then i can really get planning for the job, don't want to get too excited till i've got that sorted.

I'm having a positive day today and feel like i can accomplish lots if i set my mind to it.
Although i get most of my work from companies sub-contract and still have to search it out, because i'm self-employed i really want to push forward with my own more personal projects that i could turn into an income stream. So the next 2 months may be a good chance to try out a different way of working :)
Just need to motivate myself to actually get things done and progress, as i find that really hard because of the demotivation you get from not working. Although i wont be able to start on that until after my interview as i have lots i need to prepare for it.
Loving the feeling of 'if no one wants to give me work at the moment i'm going to create it for myself'. I might feel differently after trying, but gotta give everything a go in situations like this i guess!

Keep positive everyone, we can do this, even if it takes a while!!
My mantra recently has been 'i've had a job before, i will have another one again' :)

I think they're worse than the Nhs who take forever.... I applied to the smaritens in October they called last month to offer me some training for 20 hours. So 5 to 6 months for a response not bad!!!!!

  • I don't know whether you have one in your area but our local council have a volunteering centre and I got in with the Citizens Advice Bureau through them. I agree most charity shops are full of rude volunteers being an avid shopper in them but luckily my local BHF shop has a younger friendlier crowd in there. I think this whole thing is really pot luck on where you live there are loads of volunteer stuff this way but not much in the way of paid work. Just applied for a NHS office job, fingers and toes crossed.

Well a lot has happened on here since I left this morning. Welcome to all the newbies!

I decided against going to the interview that I was supposed to have today. I decided that everyone was right and 1 1/2 hours travelling time each way was just too much. So back to the search!
  • Ouch, I am looking at long traveling times for jobs as well just because it takes an hour to get to the bigger towns, yippee found another job to apply for that is similar to what I am doing at the moment, will do it tomorrow. I really do wish I could just get paid for what I'm doing at the moment because I am really enjoying it whereas I hated my last job with a passion.

I'm a bit tied to breakfast/after school club times with my daughter. I tried the route at the weekend and it took me 2 hours because I missed a bus and then had to wait for another. Once I pass my driving test things should be much easier!
