Hard luck sims, did you get any feedback apart from "by a hairline"? At least you got that far so there has to be something positive about that.

    Hope you find something soon.

Thank you. The agent insisted that all the feedback was very positive but after really pushing for some more info he said that the other candidate showed more enthusiasm for the company and for the role. Disappointing that is came down to something that I could have done better at the intervew. Something to work on I guess.

An agency called today about a short temp job next month. It's not very exciting and it's a lot more basic than what I can do, but technically, it's in a slightly different area where I worked last, so it would be good to put the experience on my CV. I'm currently very niche, might help broaden out my appeal. I told them they could put me forward for it - half want the work, half don't. My professional exam is next month, so if I was employed, I would have booked off the start of the next month, but if I got this job, I would have to work it all. I'm assuming I'd get the exam day off if I asked, but not anything else!

They mentioned another job they spoke to me about a while ago - I assumed the company wasn't interested in me, but apparently the client contact has been on holiday and they have no idea what's going on, so I may not have been rejected yet. Fingers crossed, that one was a bit more challenging and also much closer to home. Might also be more flexible about holiday.

I'm really worried about the announcement that the Job Centre are pulling the travel allowance for interviews - I had agreed verbally for the Job Centre to sort out a rail warrant just before I went down - but I don't know if they'll now have to back out. It would be so unprofessional to decline an interview and a meeting with the agency that put me forward for it - both the company and the agency won't touch me again.

Will call tomorrow and hope for the best. :(

    Good morning everyone.

Job centre for me today :j Also taking my Nan in town because she wants to do some shopping, which means wandering past lovely clothes shops full of lovely summery dresses I can't afford (:j again).

I emailed a local charity yesterday after seeing a job ad for fundraiser organiser. They wanted experience so there was no point applying, but I asked if they needed any volunteers. They've asked me to pop in tomorrow. I'm going to mention the ad and tell them that I got a similar job last month but it fell through (sounds better than the truth!) but if nothing comes of that I will be glad of some experience with them. 1 week tomorrow until the big 6 month milestone and I do not want that gap to get any bigger.

Hope there are lot's of jobs for us to apply for today.

Well heard back from the agent at last and it's a no. The other candidate edged it "by a hairline". Nothing I can do but pick myself up again and keep looking and hoping my luck will turn next time.

That's unfortunate but sometimes life is like that. I have conducted interviews where I had described the candidate as “gushing” (I thought to the point of going over the top to insincerity) whereas the other person thought that they were “enthusiastic”. When the suitability of the candidates is roughly even then the subjective opinions come in so the selectors can arrive at a decision.

Knowing how to “play” an interview can be incredibly difficult (I know, I’ve been there several times). One person’s enthusiasm can be another’s insincerity. As William Shakespeare wrote “This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.” (Hamlet, in case you were wondering)

You went to the interview and did your best but missed out due to the fickle nature of people. That’s nothing to blame yourself for and would you have wanted to present a false image of yourself?

Good morning all, hope we are all well today.

I have been up most of the night worried about my interview today. I have never been this nervous before and at about 4 this morning I realised that it was because in the past I have been able to walk form one job to another and have never really had to sit around and wait like this.

My interview is not until this afternoon so that gives me loads of time to try and relax a bit!

Last day of work today. But what's weird is someone I worked for about a year ago has emailed me asking how I am and what I'm up to. Maybe he needs someone... fingers crossed!
  • Good luck today people with any interviews, applications etc. Fingers crossed and lets hope a job is just around the corner. :)

This is exactly what I needed to hear this morning. I thought I showed the right amount of interest in that I made it clear I thought it was a great opportunity for me etc etc and I think it would have been over the top/not my style to gush. I'm going to try to focus on the positives this morning and not dwell on what could have been. Thank you so much for posting.
  • Morning everyone and good luck with job searching today. I got a reply from the heritage centre to say that the curator is on holiday at the moment and they will contact me in a couple of weeks about my offer to volunteer. Pity its not paid work but at least I will have a foot in the door, and it may lead to something. And at least its relevant to my degree.
