I hadn't heard about this prog till i saw this thread so I watched it with my DDs on i-player.

thought it might inspire them as they like baking but they weren't overly impressed. it seemed more of an advert for internet shopping to me!

still, as others have said, good to see a woman cook just get on with cooking instead of trying to be seductive
    weaving through the chaos...

I watched this too. I wasn't that impressed, although I did like the look of the soda bread. Despite it supposedly being for beginners, she still didn't bother telling me how I'd know when it was done.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Just watched in on Iplayer. Liked the idea of the soda bread, but OS and MS style would like to make a cheaper version without spending 70p or so on buttermilk.

I liked the cake, and also thought matchmakers, spending that much on cigarellos doesn't make it a cheap option - might as well buy one from a bakery.

And yes, I didn't think her mixer was mixing properly. LOL

Have reserved the book from my library as I can't write the recipes down quick enough as she says them.

Make your own buttermilk by curdling the milk with vinegar or lemon juice. I mainly use synthetic lemon juice if i dont have fresh . Again, as i was watching i thought - why not just tell people how to make their own?!

    :D

For the soda bread you can follow her recipe & just use milk soured with a little lemon as Zippy says. Buttermilk is such a faf to get.

I really liked the show, loved the fig tart.

I spotted the book today in WH Smith and had a very quick flick through it. I was surprised to see recipes for things like omelette Arnold Bennett and roast beef?! Not exactly my idea of baking.
  • Similar style for the cake sides would be, melt chocolate whichever type you prefer, spread it out onto sheets of greaseproof paper leave to harden and then roll the greaseproof paper up loosely, then unroll, you will end up with shards of chocolate that you can use, much cheaper option, and probably quite tasty too! I would put the buttercream on the sides only and then roll the cake across the shards, never done it though, so don't blame me for any mishaps! Lol.

I watched it but wasn't that keen. The one thing I did love was that baking shop she went in to! I really want to go! I'm guessing it is in London, does anyone know?

I showed it to DH (from sky+), he thinks its the Kings Road.
