    I'm watching it.

One of my 'to do's' for 2011 was to learn how to bake. I remember making an apple pie at school and being told I had 'warm hands' which was why my pastry didn't work out. Thats as far as my baking has gone. I'd like to make some basic cakes and biscuits.

I hope she does a list of staple ingredients for baking. I know there's plain flour and self raising. But I've seen 'strong' flour. Some recipe's call for baking powder, others, baking soda, cream of tartar. I don't know what half these things are.....

Strong flour is probably bread flour. It has a higher gluten content AFAIK

i would recommend bicarbonate of soda (or otherwise referred to as baking soda - ive written this on my tub as i get it confused sometimes) and baking powder. They are both different kinds of raising agents. Ive never needed to use cream of tartar after baking for a year or two . Bicarb or baking powder may interest you & cream of tartar - what do you use it for?

My baking must haves would be

    Plain flour
    Self raising flour
Strong white bread flour (if youre into making bread)
    Baking powder
    Bicarb
    Vanilla extract - good quality
    Caster sugar

Over the years it has built up to many different types of flours, nuts, accessories such as icing pens, various kinds of sugar, wholemeal, - well a whole cupboard full!

her list of must have equipment is quite subjective really as there were a few things on the list i personally dont have or need , so it really depends what you hope to bake . I cant find the list right now to refer to.:D

this thread baking basics may also interest you

her recipes are here if anyone's interested. Loved that cake but buying cigarrilos seems a bit ummmmm excessive but ok for a special occasion.
    Zip :)
