  • Jamie Oliver - olive oil with everything.
    Lorraine Pascal - vanilla pods!!

I love the programmes but don't necessarily find the recipes very cheap. Will try and use some cheaper alternatives to alter price.

Also when Jamie Oliver makes a pudding using vanilla he uses vanilla paste which makes olive oil look positively cheap!

    I LOVE vanilla bean paste!

A 310g bottle contains the equivalent to over 30 pods. Not bad value really when you consider that I've never seen a pod under £1.00 (in fact Asda has the cheapest at £2.50 for two). The bottle I've got costs £14.25 (43p/portion). On offer, they were £9.00 (27p).

You also get the prettiness of the beans and without the harshness of the alcohol in vanilla essence.

He uses such a huge splodge of it - I wonder how many beans that equates to?

I usually use the vanilla extract (if I can afford it) and if I can't afford I use the vanilla flavouring. Yes, yes, I know it's never even walked past an actual vanilla pod!

    Loads!

    It's 9g/around 3 small splodges (technical term, you understand :p) per pod - I weighed it :A

You just use what suits you/your budget. I do have a bottle of extract, but it's made with alcohol and I think it's too harsh. I'd prefer to use essence if I couldn't have the paste
