I used to work for a water company.

Your meter seems to be working fine in that you flushed the toilet and took before and after readings, and they appear to coincide nicely. However the black and red thing is clearly worrying and does not match their advice or indeed their own readings as clearly their own meter reader has followed their own advice, but the black readings are never going to match up.
I think the safest thing is to keep taking daily readings if you can bear to lol, and get someone out whilst you can be there and sort it out. Something is not quite right.
My previous comment was based on common sense and experience only lol

    Hope you get it sorted!
Thank you for your reply. Why do you think the black and red thing is clearly worrying? I would really appreciate your professional advice.:)

The red digits first was worrying.

We all thought you had made a mistake, but you insisted, even after querying, that it was red digits first.

The only issue now is if you or United Utilities are reading the correct meter for your flat.

An actual UU meter reading of 576 is not compatible with your reading of 03391275 - you should not have 4 red digits only 3.

well that clears that up then..

Is there a bank of meters ? how do you know the one you are reading is yours ?

I just looked at my note writen on 15/12/10. I wrote it down as 0338-551. I presume that it was black 0338 followed by red 551. I could easily make a mistake by given them 551 as a black.

If so this is a complete red (or black) herring, as all you've used is around 1 cu m in about 3 weeks...

UU marked it with my number on it. There are 24 meters from 24 flats in the same place.

I am just thinking whether or not to tell UU that I could make a mistake on 15/12/10. That it actually was red 551 and black 0338. I also could easily miss red 0 before 551
Doesn't it actually make sense 03380551????

It doesnt make sense that you have consistently read your meter as 0338 or 0339 and yet United Utilities took an actual reading of 0576.

And as I keep saying there can only be 3(three) red numbers - yet you continually write down 4(four) red numbers. The last 3 numbers in red are hundreds. tens and single litres. 1 cubic metre(the numbers in black) equals 1000lites.

Either you or UU are reading the wrong meter. It is the serial number of the meter that counts not some marking on the meter cover. That was probably done by the developer.

I believe it's actually my meter. It were 4 red numbers and the last red number was moving when I left the water running.

It does sound like your meter if it was the only one moving when you left the water running..But I think it is still best to keep the appointment with UU and explain the situation and your concerns and see what they say. They should flow test the meter and with you there that is much easier anyway and it also means that they can check the bill and sort out the readings once and for all as it does sound like ( as we said to begin with) that you have used 1 cm3 but that somehow the meter is being read wrong.

It would really help if you could get a photo though when you get a chance so that we can see what you are looking at.

does it say what kind of meter it is on it Ie something like Kent, Fusion.
