problem with my water meter reading

I took my water reading on 10/12/10 and it was 551 cubic metres. The United Utilities charge is a £1.374 each. I checked it today again and it's 1201 cubic metres. If I calculate it appears that I used 650 cubic metres for the last month. It's £893.1 for one month!!! I live on my own on 2 bedroom flat. What I have to do? What can it be?

Are you sure it wasn't 5.51 cubic metres and now 12.01 cubic metres so you have used 6.5 cubic metres.
P.S. They might charge £1.374 for water, but normally more than that for sewerage.0 -

There were four red figures and three black. it was 0338551 on 15/12/10. Today when I checked I saw four red and four black 03391201
Is there a problem?
Thanks for your advice.0 -

How to read your meter
We only require the black numbers from your meter, these represent the cubic meters you've used. Please ignore the red digits. When completing our form please complete all five fields placing zeros at the beginning.
We only advise you to read internal meters and even then, only when it's safe to do so. Meters that are fit externally under manhole covers should not be lifted without the correct equipment so please give us a call if you need some help
I have only seen black(whole cubic mtres) followed by red - red being decimals.
Is your meter upside down;) or Dichromacy;)0 -
Sorry I am still unclear.
Are you saying it was red numbers first? followed by black?
It can't change from a 7 digit display to an 8 digit display - you must have read it incorrectly on 15 Dec.0 -

Yes, red numbers first followed by black. Let's presume that I have read it incorrectly and missed one red digit number on 15/12/10 but I definitely saw three black numbers in the end 551. The United Utilities took their own meter reading on 10/12/10 and it was 576. I just want to know why it's now 033912010 -
This is taken from the United Utilities website http://www.unitedutilities.com/SubmitaMeterReading.aspx
Water meter information
Meter serial No. (if known):
For household customers your meter will have 4 or 5 digits on a black or white background, followed by 2 or 3 in a red background. Include all the numbers on the black or white background and ignore all the red ones

My meter reader is different. Red numbers go first.0 -
Odd, because if you read it like a normal meter then there should be 1 CM3 used but then you don't read the red numbers so that does not really help much.
I would ring UU and ask them for an appointment to read the meter and check that the dials are correct. You will need to ask for them to call you to confirm the appointment and you should allow 5 working days but I think that might be the best idea.
Can you take a photo ?There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

Not today! Too dark outside of my block. I will take a photo tomorrow. I will also call UU to book an appointment.0
