I've been very I'll recently so my husband has had to take care of my finances and I had been contacted by the money club on a referral from my parents. As I was ill at the time of the call I thought my parents were trying to help me so I agreed with the set up and it wasn't until a few months later that I mentioned the referal to my dad and he told me he had never heard of the money club. As it was £98 a year I thought it would be okay for helping buy the occasional large expensive item so i let it go.

As I said I've been ill and not keeping track of my finances as I've been in and out of hospital and my husband has muttered about it being a waste of money that needs cancelling but we couldnt find the paperwork and I said it was just £98 a year then he showed me a statement that they have been taking £98 a MONTH for the past seven months. I am disabled on disability and haven't used the 'service'

They state I have to cancel in writing and I 'may' get a refund. As it says it is an annual subscription surely they have to refund six of the payments? Any advice is appriciated.
  • End of June 2014 and they're still at it!

I just had a call from 01753 441503 asking for my mother by name and, once he knew it wasn't her on the phone, saying she had requested information from them. That seemed unlikely to begin with...

He gave the spiel, then offered to send an information pack in the post. No problem, said I. Ok then, he said, which bank are you with? I answered that and he asked for my sort code. Why did he need that to send me an information pack? Oh, that will also include your membership card...

Needless to say, I went straight to the computer and did a quick search. I asked for the name of the company - surely at the point somebody asks that they then know there'll be a search for it? He told me to put in their website address. I came here. So, no ball!

Remember, that's 01753441503 - & by the looks of it a few others too! OK, will try to get these together to help google hits on this forum... Happy (genuine!) shopping! :)

    Numbers seem to be...

    01753441503 01753 441503
    01753441520 01753 441520
    01753733733 01753 733733
Thanks for the phone numbers. I tried the first two numbers to be told I had dialled incorrectly. I then tried the last one, 01753 733733 an got through to their automated cancelling service. I had to leave name, postcode and membership number. Hopefully that will do the trick.

    For everyone: Regarding Direct Debits:-
If a Direct Debit has been debited to your account in error, the rules are that your bank or the company should give you a full and immediate refund. Don't let banks pull the wool over your eyes on this one. As it's well nigh impossible to contact the company, the bank should make the refund and pursue it with the company on your behalf. This is in the Direct Debit agreement you should have received from TMC along with any membership packs.

I've just had a call from these guys, Lady was a fast talker making it all sound fantastic, then it got to my bank sort and account number, before I give anyone these details I like to know they are for real, so googled whilst I was on the phone to her telling her my internet was down and could not get the details just yet!! Glad at times I have some sort of brain, she had my email add, home add, telephone number everything!!! Needless to say when she calls back in 1 hour I will not be answering!!!! So glad I found this thread, thanks guys xxx

Oh and the number was 01162555255
  • I worked there for a week, couldn't sell anything because I felt bad for the people I spoke too. Do not trust! It's a scam!
  • I just got a call from the money club. They talked a good game and I almost gave out bank information but didnt. It just sounded a but odd to me, have found other reviews online that aren't good so glad I held back. Have a feeling they will call me back.
  • I just had a call from them. I let them speak, didn't actually confirm my name or address. I got asked "I'll send you a pack out, who do you bank with?"

So immediately I think, those 2 aren't connected, why do you need to know. And asked. He got quite defensive, I wasn't even remotely having a g, no intonation in my voice to suggest so either... they just know they're being dodgy and shifty with the way they do it... they said "We don't need any personal or bank card details off you!"

Well, you wanted to know my name, address, bank, bank account number and sort code... that's pretty personal.

I explained that I'm trying to save money by stopping purchasing unnecessary purchases and with no big items planned for a year, thank you for taking the time to explain but it wasn't a service I was interested in investing in. Especially as they want a one off paymet of £98 after the trial. No thanks. If I'm not planning on buying anything that would be suitable for this within a month (the trial period) how can I trial it?!

I asked how they got my details... they weren;t particularly clear and said t could have been from years ago. But as I've only recntly moved into this house, it must have been from something this year. They said that they had connections with Groupon... which I do use for boring things like toilet rolls! But I've also used "Hello Fresh" which has connections with Groupon too and I'm wondering if they got the details from there.

I am finding it more and more disconcerting that shops are asking for e-mail and postcode when you are shopping in an actual shop on purchase...theres often pressure on the customer to provide it as "it's just to see how far our customers travel and send you latest offers". I've stopped doing this but I have done it in the past at TKMaxx and Blacks. Other customers may not be able to be so assertive.

Anyway. The website address of themoneyclub1988.com seemed to be a pretty ropey website. I found another money club one which looked a bit more leit. But theres the potential there are spoof companies under a similar name and similar premise of operations... Again, probably to make people think they are the other one...

Regardless, I say it's too dodgy to take the risk. Steer clear, hang up if needs be... they are pressure sellers.

Just got a call from this lot so they're still around. Woman on the other end of the phone was a bit cagey about where they got my details, possibly from Vanquis (had a similar call a couple of months ago from a company called something like "Remember To Save With Money Saver" connected to my Vanquis card as they said they would take membership from my card and didn't ask for details - cancelled straight away). I barely use Groupon and the email address for Groupon is different from the one they knew.

Anyway, they had my address and email address and obviously my phone number. The woman on the other end of the phone also asked for my sort code and account number but made no mention of how much the membership fee was at all! Just kept saying it was £1 for the trial. Seems a bit dodgy.

The website (if it's the same one I saw) looked a bit amateurish.

I refused to give out bank details for obvious reasons. She got a bit defensive when I said I wouldn't give any details or set up any kind of direct debit with any kind of cold caller and promptly hung up when she realised she wasn't getting anywhere.

***ETA: The number they called me on was 0116 255 5255***

  • Had a call from this lot today, never heard of them before. I listened to the lady for about ten mins then when she told me I would need to give the bank details for the £1 special, I was smart enough to say my bag was in my locker and I did not have the details. She went on and on asking if I could look up my bank statement on my smartphone email and forward a copy as that would show the details. Companies like this make me mad because they are targeting all sorts of people who could actually be really vulnerable and not quick enough to realise what a scam it is. No idea where she got all my info she knew everything (apart from payment which she wanted). No mention of The £98 but really glad I've seen it now on here!! She says she will call back tomorrow to take payment but obviously I won't be answering.
Ps well done to the ex staff member who has come on here to tell us it's a scam! Brave of you to leave and warn others :)

I was called by The Money Club and was told about the excellent savings available and I agreed to a 30 day trial. This required a direct debit to be set up. They took £1 on 7 May 2015. At the end of the trial on 26 May 2015 they took £98 for 1 year's membership. On July 1 2015 they took another £98. I called them to query the July 1 payment and received messages that there was no one available to take my call and to leave details and they would return my call. I called again 4 times and emailed them. I called reception who said that the customer service line was busy and they would call me back. Finally I called my bank who agreed to reimburse the payment and I called Citizens' Advice who told me that this was a breach of contract and would be passed to Trading Standards who would collate with any other complaints and decide whether criminal action was appropriate.

    Have you cancelled that DD?

I am sure I wrote this before, but when I had my trial years ago I found that I found better deals than TMC quite easily myself so would consider not using them a great start (£98 saved).
