Hi guys. I just wanted to ask - is everyone on this forum "professional competition submitters" - you all sound like you do this full time
?
Joking aside and from a technical point of view, I used to work for a company that developed software for retail companies to use to run competitions - i.e. entrant answers a question by filling out a form or playing a game which submits their details to a database and then a marketing person clicks a big red button to pick a random entry from the database (the winner) and then the software sends an email to them.
I have seen competition errors like this one time and time again. So I can see how Zavvi will have made this mistake - they run competitions all the time judging by their Facebook page - they will most likely have clicked the big red "Pick Winner" button on the "32" TV + Blu-ray competition" (that had already been won a few weeks before) instead of the current competition they had running at the time. The software zavvi use most likely lets you run multiple competitions at once or one after the other while keeping an archive of them all at the same time.
All entries will also being submitted to the same customer details database in order to build up a valuable data asset (which they WILL sell by the way).
So basically it's down to human error. That said, I think Zavvi will have to bite the bullet and give Gary a 32" TV and Blu-Ray player. I have known for competitions to go wrong like this one in similar circumstances - and some even lesser confusing circumstances (I recall one competition having extremely ambiguous terms and conditions on it - which was a disaster, especially when pro-competition players are about!) - in all instances, the prize or cash equivalent was given to the unlucky (or should I say lucky) entrant(s).
Zavvi are no doubt asking the software developers if they can take some sort of responsibility for the error and they are probably saying "NO, idiots....that's why the button is big and RED" :T0 -

What do you class as a "professional comper"? I have a job, but I enter lots of competitions (better than watching the soaps IMO).
I think we all accept that it was an accident (I feel really sorry for whoever mucked up) but Gary was told he had won and should pursue it.0 -
I still feel sorry for Gary, so I am going to bob on Zavvi every few days and put a comment on.
Think its best to put them on the status of Zavvis rather than the wall in general, cos then everyone will see them (not everyone has the filter to Zavvi + Others on FB).
Hope you will join me. The only reason I am doing this is because mistake or no mistake, they should honour the prize they said he had won - and god knows they make enough money, its not as if its a tittly little local shop on a shoestring budget.
Hoping to shame them into being honourable!
See u there xxxxLogic will get you from A to B but imagination can take you anywhere!
Being honest may not get get you a lot of friends - but it will get you the right ones.
Let your past make you better, not bitter.0 -

I'm not sure they do make much profit these days, god knows why - just look at HMV (and remember that the original Zavvi when into administration).0 -
