\Thinking of you on your adventures cheri!

Just popped in because I remembered you asked me a question and I can't remember where, so thought I'd answer it here and it'll be here when you get back :rotfl:

You asked about a book I was reading - actually called 'Getting things done' - by David Allen :) I read it thinking it was too fussy, and by the time I got to the end was prepared to give it a go - am currently sorting through my desk and thinking it's FABULOUs! :rotfl: (mind you, that's the initial sorting, not the actual maintenance :rotfl:)

Just collecting together EVERYTHING I have to do at work (and I'll do the same for home) is IMMENSELY freeing - stops me constantly fretting I've forgotten something! :rotfl: Turns out most of my in tray is just things to read - which is, after all, what train commutes are for :D Feeling better arleady!

Missed your conversation about strikes, must go back and investigate, quite ambivalent about them really - absolutely necessary in the past, but I just can't get enthusiastic about my pension rights - I happen to think they far outstrip what I deserve :o Just don't have that innate sense of entitlement :o And strikes often seem like stomping feet and pouting to me! :o Have just voted against our latest round - but if you're in a union and there's an overall vote FOR one, it's hard not to feel like you SHOULD take part - one out, all out and all that!

Anyway, will leave you to your exciting holiodays and quit rambling on!¬ :T :rotfl:

I do like the sound of that book, Cheery - having stuff to do in one place feels absolutely basic to me - interesting what happens when you analyse it, too.

Isn't it amazing! No idea where you are in Austri Cheri, but I love the Tirol. I've never been - was a huge fan of the The Chalet School books when I was younger and always wanted to go. And no doubt I will one day.

Hope your few days aren't all stressful and you manage to take in some of the breath-taking views. :)

I am back, let the future begin :)

Tirol, exactly where I am going to be Nic :)

Tired, only just back will catch up with everybody and then plan a blog entry to share.

Cheery, absolutely agree on ambivalence and strikes, however I have paid into my pension for a very long time, was promised lots of things that, if the truth be known and sad as I (and many civil servants) am, kept me in the lowest paying job for many years when my friends were earning double my salary and with a lot less responsibility. No more, I am now following my passion not my pension. As for state pension - I kind of agree about not expecting that as just an entitlement but again, people paid many years taxes in the belief that it would help people at vulnerable times in their lives and being a pensioner can be one of those times.
Now as for one out all out. I used to be staunch unionist and believed this however in recent years when I analysed how many people voted and the percentage of yes votes within the overall numbers of union members it was usually less than 10%. Therefore I considered people were actually voting against a strike by not actually voting. Not that I agree with that either but there you go.

The Chalet School series is gradually being republished and still has a loyal, if small, following, including some young people. I was on a forum dedicated to them a few years ago and made friends with people from all over. In fact, three of us went to the Lakes to see the Arthur Ransome sites - the other two came from US and Canada especially to do just that. A Botanist, an Epidemiologist and a Statistician went to the Lakes! - sounds like a bad joke.

As the daughter of a Shop Steward, I had problems with to strike or not to strike. My main problem is that there doesn't seem to be any alternative way of being heard. :(
But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?

Oooh, The Chalet school books being republished. That's enough to get me up into my parent's loft to see which ones I never had. :D

And there's an entire forum dedicated to them... guess what I'm off to do now... Thanks Tricia :D

Uhm... is now the time to admit I'm not a member of our union? I have to pay two other sets of professional fees, it seemed like duplication... But I do understand the difficulties of being heard when you work in the public sector... or anywhere else for that matter I guess.

Totally agree on the ways of being heard. Sometimes strike is the only option. As I said, I am not against striking but I like to weigh up all of the options and make sure that I am happy it is the only way. Nic, there can be lots of duplication with professional bodies. I will also admit to no longer being a member of my union - for many reasons and none of them because I dont believe in unions as I was brought up by very strong unionists. Although is now the time to admit that one of my ancestors was killed by the Luddites?
Three Luddites ambushed a mill-owner (William Horsfall) in Crosland Moor, Huddersfield; the Luddites responsible were hanged in York, and shortly thereafter 'Luddism' waned.

Cheri! Is the blue a linkie originally? Crosland Moor is a very familiar name to me, my lot come from Holmfirth via Huddersfield ... if you've got a linkie, can you repost? Knowing what my lot were like, I wonder - I can only trace back to the 1850s on this line at the moment, but its fascinating ...
